We never got going in this game. We were bossed by a physically imposing, skilful and highly motivated City. Adam Johnson got a lot of joy against Agger and it was only a matter of time before they broke our vulnerable defence. Having got the goal their confidence went up a notch and I thought at that point we were likely to concede more.
We did at least try to get our passing game together but a lot of it was sideways and we never really penetrated their defence. I thought we also waited too long to change personnel but perhaps the game had already gone anyway. Hodgson looked thoughtful throughout and I'm sure the size of his task is just beginning to dawn. He now has the extra headache of a want away player which couldn't have helped the team's preparations.
The City line-up is very impressive now and I don't think we'll be the only club that goes down to a heavy defeat, their biggest barrier will be self-belief as they surely have the players to mount a significant title challenge.
As for us, it's a matter of gleaning maximum points against usually inferior teams and try to build a decent points tally, whilst for us fans it's a matter of hope that the club's owners change and we can at least have a period of optimism. Unless major investment is forthcoming I can't see us improving on last years finishing place even if our better players stay fitter longer. We are second tier in terms of squad depth, no amount of good old commonsense and honey words will elevate us, as ever cash is king. Benitez knew it and so does Hodgson.
