Really? No-one would ever believe it due to them playing for Liverpool!

Aquilani plays well so Lucas gets a kick up the arse and does well.

I don't think it was that at all mate. I think he was actually given license to push forwards. Dropped deeper in the 2nd half which did us no favours at all.

Yeah, that was my impression. Which really makes you wonder if Lucas is actually such a useless, inert midfielder after all - or whether he's been playing that way UNDER INSTRUCTION. Remember when he came to us he was supposed to be a Gerrard-esque attacking midfielder? All the sideways passing and the lack of adventure - was Benitez telling him to play like that? It defies belief, but what other solutions are there?

I was pondering this last night.

Either way it defies belief. The only possible other solution was in Stevie's & Lucas interview afterwards.

I dunno if you saw it, but Lucas said he asked Gerrard if he could push up & he said yeah. It just may be possible Lucas has been worried about stepping on Gerrard's toes by playing further up into his position.

It's unlikely, but only as unlikely as Lucas suddenly deciding he cant play attacking football with us or Rafa telling him he cant till last night.

No, I didn't see that. Fucking hell - it's like kids in a playground. Surely our tactics are a bit more considered than that?

7 goals in two games.

2010 is going to be a great year.

Maybe we can "Reinvent Football*" again?

you have the memory of an elephant bren, seriously. totally forgot about that thread, methinks khl got a 'little' carried away by our early season goal fest.

I'm pretty sure he started it when we'd just drawn 4-4 with Arsenal and essentially lost the title.

I also remember being apoplectic with anger about how fucking shit a thread it was.

So before Rafa had even considered poisoning Aquilani, he had long embarked on a campaign of grima wormtonguing Lucas Leiva into a shadow of a player? And if someone could just break that spell, we'll see some mix of Kaka and Fabregas storming through the midfield? I can't wait.

It couldn't just be that we are playing with a bit more confidence now that we've got a bit of defensive solidity, pacier players behind us, and we've only got one weak fullback?

It couldn't be that having Torres and Gerrard fit might happen to create a good deal of space, create a significant speed threat, and keep the opposition midfield far far more honest, and less willing to press high up the pitch?

It couldn't be that Lucas just isn't that aggressive, or good?

No, that'd be silly.

Lucas once in a while shows some ambition, ability on the dribble, and an eye for a pass. He's not an entirely useless player. The idea that Rafa has been stifling him somehow is supremely bizarre to consider, given that Rafa seems to see more in him than virtually any one watching.

Lucas has been doing a lot of defensive work at times, because he has absolutely needed to due to our weak back line, and, due to our incredibly anemic, slow attack when we have significant injuries, we have struggled to get out of our half, so there's been more defending to do in general. Lucas has also been a significant part of the problem at times by lacking the poise on the ball to create space and find some good outlet ball from our weaker options in a jam as well, and instead playing the easy option.

A great team performance last night lads, well done!

Also good to see the likes of Insua and Lucas put in very decent displays.

I'm not even sure myself when I started it but I do know I was exhilarated by our football at the time. Maybe I went a bit over the top in my praise- and so fcuking what?

It's not like I was wishing for one of our players to break his leg or anything silly like that.

Have you tried anger management btw, I'm sure there's something quite wrong if a thread on an internet-forum can make you - and I quote - 'apoplectic with anger'? Especially as it was meant as a positive one about a club you seemingly love.
