It looks like Rafa doesn't want to become to reliant on Mascher.

I don't think we've ever been "reliant" on Mascherano for games like this one. I've even questioned whether he's required against teams that park the bus at Anfield but Rafa's continued to play him, until now.

Seems too much of coincidence for this to coincide with reports of him being unsettled or whatever but, yeah, I'm just speculating. I hope it is for tactical reasons because I want to see how our midfield functions without him against the lesser sides at home.

Thats the big question. I don think we need him today, but thank god he is not banned for Chelsea.

Mascherano needs to carry on developing the weaker parts of his game to avoid being regarded as a specialist only needed for certain games.

That's true, but if his heart is set on a move to Barcelona he won't have much ambition to improve those aspects. His 'specialised' nature fits perfectly into inherently attacking teams where there's absolutely no emphasis on him contributing in effective passing, etc.

We're just not like that.
