I too was wondering this, I'm guessing he'd have to have slowed down a yard before the ball and attempt to kick it up, but our players would have run in front of him in which case, impossible ball to defend.

It didn't seem like we were in control 1st half. Southampton probably should've scored before we got the 3rd. So it makes sense on that front.

I'd like to think it was arranged before the game otherwise it's a bit of a kick in the teeth for Shaqiri.

Even if he did pull him to give us more control over the midfield (which would be my guess), the fact Shaq did so well means you doubt he'll be pissed off as long as that has been recognised.

I think more control, they were getting at us to easily (as we were them), unfortunately, that doesn't seem to have much changed based on the first 5 minutes.

Whilst I agree in principle, the larger picture for me is that Klopp is trying to instill a more measured approach of controlling a game this season, & so far it's paid dividends.

Playing devil's advocate, if he didn't make the change & Southampton got themselves back into the game it could damage the longer term confidence of the side.
