Liverpool v Southampton Match Thread

The entire team was good, except for..
Ming.

He had literally nothing to do except cleaning up some overhit balls by Southampton. Yet he had 1 situation where he got an easy back pass stuck under his legs with a striker bearing down on him. He got lucky for that.

Another where the winger got free on the right and his only option was to cross. It was hit closed to Ming and he was always the favourites to it. He somehow got caught flat footed and barely managed to flick it away, only just.

Forster was equally rubbish mind. You will find it hard-pressed to find a match where 2 international keepers were the worst players on the pitch.

Yeah... Ming is looking nervy again and it is certainly spreading to the crowd to an extent, he isn’t playing extremely badly but he doesnt need to do dodgy shit like Cruyff turns....

I’m hoping we replace him at Christmas to be honest but I doubt we will, I’d prefer a top class goaly to a new center back.

Last year was the only season in which he actually won us points and I wasn’t unhappy to see him step in wearing the number 1 shirt this season but that said his performance against Spurs the other week was almost as bad as Lovrens and he is looking dodgy again.

I remember when Bertrand strode up to take his free kick the crowd sounded as if they were shitting it and Bertrand deliberately took his time so the nerves had time to wash down from the terraces, that’s Migs fault he looks shady and it puts people on edge both on and off the pitch and that gives encouragement and hope to our opponents.

I’m seen some slaggings of players of ours this season and I’m not a fan of pointing the finger at players who are under enough pressure as it is... but that said... yeah... we need a better goaly.

I agree with this totally, but I will point a big fat finger at Ming and argue that any CB pairing that plays in front of him have an up-hill struggle. Any error or lapse of concentration has a high probability of ending up in the net. Has any Premiership keeper faced fewer on target attempts and conceded more? Hopefully nobody pays enough attention to the few-and-far-between posts I make to realise I'm like a stuck record when it comes to damning Mr. Wobbly.

Make no mistake, our dijkhead defenders turned up because they were playing against their potential replacement. So they made sure to concentrate and do their utmost to appear as good as him. Otherwise they'd have been the cunts we accuse them of being.

Hey... there is no doubt after 5 years that he has been a liability and has been so nervy that he has made his defenders worse, that said after being dropped at the start of last season it was clear that he had improved certainly on his kicking which was a real weakness. He still isn’t great on crosses but he has also played looking less nervous last season and it shone out, finally he deserved the shirt last year and he did win us points.

It must be a mental thing with him or maybe it’s just that as fans we have seen him fuck things up so much that the nerves are inevitable. This is a shame for him and for us as fans but pointing the finger at players doesn’t help does it. Yesterday on TV at least I saw us not even in top gear and we played some luscious footy and the players didn’t look nervous but the lack of noise from the Kop when Soton had the ball sent a message, I’m glad the players ignored it and played with enough confidence regardless.

Maybe after 40 years of supporting I’m beyond cure of ridiculous optimism disease but... I think we are looking good, and that includes our shit goaly....

Maybe people are too busy sitting down and taking selfies or something to actually sing but....

I reckon we are allowed to be excited by this team, they themselves are looking as though regardless of little cruyff turns the players still have confidence.

We gifted Spurs 2 early goals and then fought back only to concede in the 47th minute, we’ve been down to ten men against an on fire City team and still never quit playing.... apart from 2 disasters we’ve generally looked the best team on the pitch every time we played. If pointing fingers would help I would do it but... I think we could do really well and it looks to me that the players think the same.

I would argue strongly that in nearly 40 years of going to most games at Anfield, the crowd has never been loud for a Southampton game. In 1999 we beat them 7-1 and no one gave a fuck. You can't have a great atmos every week. You can't have your favourite dinner every night. You can't have a great fuck every day. Southampton are pie and chips while you're rushing to meet your mates. They're some fat barmaid you didn't even tell your mates you banged. It's not our fault, it's theirs.

Hahaha.... true enough...

Maybe I just miss the noise from a standing Kop, fuck it maybe I’m just feeling homesick I left a long time ago. At times you could hear the nerves which was a shame because regardless of patches of near dodginess we actually strolled to a win, which was good to see. In terms of crowd noise itself one thing I’m a firm believer that they should do is not play YNWA over the tannoy, it is super fucking loud and it just isn’t needed, the crowd will do it without assistance.

I really like this post - especially the last paragraph. We are looking good and its true and it reflects Klopp's view of the games we have played. That one performance against Spurs where we decided as a team not to defend and the game against City where we just gave up for some reason after Mane got sent off - all the others we were easily the better team and should have won all of them when we drew. Hopefully we are building up momentum now and that maybe just maybe in many years the worse part of the season is over for us - the signs are really good considering we are going to have Lallana come back too.

I always thought using the word goaly or goalie instead of a goalkeeper was a tell-tell sign of an American "soccer" fan on par with "roster" and "franchise." Am I wrong?

Yes. Molby Twin looks like a universal nonce for use of that word. Not just American nonce. Sorry mate, I know you're a seasoned red but get that vocab shit together. :redcard:

unlikely since most American sports do not apply goalkeepers.

Dismissing the use of the word "goalie" doesn't square with my experience. I would say "keeper" but I hear "goalie" used often enough, including by the media.

No we really did quit playing against City, it was embarrassing.

However I'd like to replay that Spurs game if the PL will allow it, our confidence took a hammering thanks to Lovren's gifts but I still feel we are a better team and could have beat them without his meltdown. Even at 2-1 down we looked like we could get even .. or better, there wasn't much in at at that stage. That 3rd gift of the day really killed us.

Yep. Goalie when necc' (necessary) was standard phrasing when playing footy without enough players, but during a game you'd never hear 'goalies' it'd always 'keepers' when he wanted the defenders to leave it for him. Either is fine, never considered it American at all tbh.
