I agree it's almost certainly a foul elsewhere on the pitch. Because of the game-changing nature of awarding a penalty as compared to a free kick at midfield, I think the standard should potentially be a bit more stringent.

If it were the other way around I'd be furious with our defender for giving the official the option.
