Liverpool v Burnley Match Thread

Hi All

Erm..please tell me if you are completely lost on this team and don't know what to expect - because I have not got a fucking clue. I saw the chances created - the shots and all but I don't know - I really don't know. Someone post something to calm this feeling of complete hopelessness regarding this team of ours - we could have easily lost that game at the end. At no point did that fucking ball want to go in the net despite all the possession and shit - we ain't that different from Man City when it comes to creating chances so I can only think that the absence of a world class or above average striker is what is missing. We have a load of creating men up front - maybe that is the problem. Thought the victor over Crystal Palace meant we could drill through busses this season but alas - it is not to be my friends.

MORON (the down-trodden)

We need to become less reliant on Mane for our cutting edge, though I'm hopeful that fetching van Dijk and Keita in will help the team's overall balance.

Fully miserable week really... no doubt... but on the bright side we didn't give em three points like Chelsea did...

And that did look like a pen at the end.... but of good luck would be nice.... anyway fuck it... too many beers to worry about it now.

Groundhog day. It's only mid-September and this season already feels like it's unravelling a bit. Not fucking good.

Klopp looks proper fucked today. I just hope it dont carry to the team. I mean the are really trying but we need more options in these games where Mane is not playing.

This is how close we were to losing. Think of that before giving Matip any shit for this game.

Yeah i know it was so close and then you had that other save later on after that. Fuck we really did almost lose it.

Question for the 98% of people on here who know more about football tactics than I do - how do you go about breaking down a defence that sets up the way Burnley did? It struck me yesterday that part of our specific problem is that we start panicking very early on. We don't - particularly in midfield - have a great deal of composure when a team sets up behind the ball in that way. And then there's the issue of our midfield not being able to win the ball back in a counter attack high enough up the pitch.

Basically the same way we played. By slowly breaking them down with pace, tempo, movement and accuracy.
I hate to say it, but if we had a better striker we would have easily won that game.
If we had a fit Coutinho or Mané we would have won.
I even think a Lallana would be absolutely helpful against a team like Burnley, because he's constantly moving around.
Our big problem is that we become static too many times during the game, which makes us pretty easy to read. I said earlier that subbing Coutinho killed us, because his movement and dribbling made them lose their shape, which gifted us a few chances.

It's scandalous how many Burnley players were unmarked after we lost the initial header. Despite all the criticism that Benitez got for playing the zonal marking at set pieces we were far better at it then than we are now. If the current players aren't disciplined enough be be able to play zonal marking then maybe it could improve if we started playing man for man. It's hard to envisage it being worse than it currently is.

Man City are currently providing the masterclass of how to do it. That first time cross from De Bruyne was sensational. None of our players could have done that. Aside from having better players, I guess tactically you're hoping to stretch the play as much as possible by pushing your full backs up, quick switch of plays, strikers dropping deep, luring CB's out of position, winning free-kicks, clinical finishing and accurate final balls. You need to unsettle the backline as much as possible and ruthlessly exploit any mistakes or space provided.

When he's on form I don't think any other team's players could do it.

I wondered about the decision not to bring Wijnaldum on in the second half. His tight control and ability to cycle the ball around quickly would have been useful in trying to break down that defense. I didn't see what Oxlade-Chamberlin was going to offer in that regard. Milner for Wijnaldum would have been my first sub around 65 or 70 minutes.

[article]Daniel Sturridge is reaping the rewards for putting himself through his own 'pre-pre-season' when he spent his holidays working in the gym before reporting back with the rest of Liverpool's players.

The injury-plagued 28-year-old believes he's in his best shape in two years, and underlined that with his effort in the 1-1 draw with Burnley – his first 90 minute Premier League appearance since May 2016.

Sturridge didn't manage a goal despite having seven attempts, but only midfielder James Milner ran more than his 6.6 miles while he was also among the top strikers this weekend for the number of sprints made (53).[/article]

He looked rusty for much of the first half but was our primary threat in the second.
