We do this every year in the CL it seems. We have a chance to rest a bunch of players in the last group game and we somehow mess it up. Especially when were in desperate need of rest.

My only regret is that we genuinely were trying quite hard.

There's going to be lots of ugly games this season.

That was poor. Quickly to be forgotten, and we’re still in control of this group to finish first.
On to Brighton.

Yeah but we rested a handful tonight (or they played 35 mins at most) and they were likely in more need of it now. With players coming back there will be opportunities to rest some of them.

I think had the quartet of subs come on one stoppage of play earlier, we might not have conceded and the result would have been different. Atalanta scored while Jota, Firmino, Fabs and Robbo were standing on the sideline for several minutes waiting for the referee's whistle (which never came even when Wijnaldum was possibly fouled) and then they used our shock and their burst of confidence to produce almost a carbon-copy of the goal 4 minutes later and put the game to bed. Much better tempo and urgency from us since the subs and Robbo in particular made a huge difference – watching him made me realize what it means to "be playing with authority" - such crisp decision-making! Mane probably played his worst game as a Red.

Interesting how Papu Gomez always seemed to be unmarked and available for a pass. If I had time, I would have rewatched this game and try to understand his movement.

Well that was shit, unfortunately there are alot of players in our squad that are just not at the level required when called upon. We were poor all over the pitch and even after the changes we had no momentum or clewr plan to break them down. Bad night at the office we move on.

Id be careful if I was Origi Tsimikas or Neco knocking on Klopps door to ask about more playing time after that shit show.

Neco Williams (and Rhys Williams) are going to make mistakes, like every other young defender. Trent was dropped and rotated multiple times in his first season for this exact same reason, so was Carragher. Competitive games like this are great for their development.

Neco was also a lot better in the second half, getting forward more and getting crosses in.

Origi and Tsimikas were dreadful. Tsimikas has a lot of work to do if he's going to challenge Robertson. I don't know why Origi is still here.

But it wasn't just them. Mane was abysmal, Salah anonymous and Origi pitiful. Even Millie & Gini wereoff their games (understandably, they were very tired and we'd better pray Hendo & Thiago are fit for Brighton).

Neco had one of his poorer games, but he has very good ones too, so it's understandable that the young lad, with the front three playing so poorly, would be under far more pressure than normal leading to errors, in fact that goes for Tsimitas too to an extent.

Rhys showed his immaturity and inexperience but that is to be expected at 18/19, it was for the senior players to keep him in line. In fact not one player was up to his normal standards bar Becker. Therefore I find it hard to blame the squad players too much because there was no leadership at all from the senior players.

Rhys was pretty good though
Except for one of the goals. Matip had a right go at him because he was 10m away from Matip when the play was on our left. He should never have been that far away. But as I said above - young and immature so to be expected and the senior players should have been pulling him into line.

Tsimikas had a few decent moments in attack, but his decision-making just seemed so unpredictable (in a bad sense) and confusing even for his teammates. I don’t know if it’s a result of overload of information or he’s just generally like this - hopefully it’s the former. At his age he should be far more assured than Neco on the opposite flank, but that was not the case.

I guess we saw again a problem of having three 'system' CMs, similar to when we have played Millie, Hendo & Gini before. One day we'll learn the lesson that one of this trio really needs to be someone good at breaking lines, making runs, joining the attack. Granted they also had two rookie (to the system) full backs playing too.

Yeah I dont disagree there were poor/tired performances all over the pitch. But Mané has 1 bad game every what 20 or 30, hes got credit in the bank.

When you're a fringe player who is trying to make the case that you should be included you really need to impress with the opportunities you get. I dont see that from any of our fringe players.

We complain about the fitness issues with the likes of Keita, Shaq Ox etc The difference is when they are fit you see pretty clearly what they bring to the team. With the likes of Origi, Minamino and to a lesser extent Tsimikas and Neco I dont see it.

The problem yesterday. We had no creative ball players/ playmakers on the field, and by the time we brought them on.. the rest of the team was tired and jaded..

It was just tippy tappy nonsense with no crossfield passes or urgency to get forward

Our squad is dependent on the likes of Robertson and TAA for this... who's ball playing skills can split any tough defence wide open..

Our most creative ball playing playmakers are TAA, Robbo, Henderson (Yes Henderson), VVD, Shaqiri, Milner and Thiago..

We had only one of them in the side. So we where always going to struggle.. the full backs just failed to get forward.. You don't do that in this Liverpool team.. The forward 3 just become static, rather than free following, like we seen against Leicester

Robbo was doing his nut on the bench.. Chomping at the bit... So It was no surprise within minutes of coming on he managed to do what nico and the greek failed to do all game..

Thiago once fit is going to be an important signing for us.. he will not only give us a great ball playing options from midfield, but will give us an alternative from what we see from our 1st choice fullbacks week in week out..

Agreed that I felt Tsimikas showed glimpses of quality end product - there was one cross that was pretty dangerous but he had Divock standing like a statue in the middle - not making any movement or finding space. Tough gig. He was poor at the back.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. But here's were I hope that Klopp has learnt a lesson or two...

The starting Line up...

I understand resting players, but I believe unless forced too you want to be starting your strongest team, especially in the CL. Now altough we look as if we will qualify it can still go wrong,Two games and 6 points to be had, it is unlikely, but the possiblity is still there.

There; (For me) were acouple of things wrong with this line up,(besides not starting our strongest team) The LB position, early in the first half we were struggling in that position and should have subbed Tsimikas, For Fabinho, Moved Milner to LB and moved Gini further up field and slotted Fab's into his normal role. The defence would have been more robust and the Midfield more competitive. Jones is a great young player but he struggles when the load is put on his young shoulders to control the midfield almost alone (Milner and Gini covering both R/LB's alot)

Forwards...
Why was Origi even in the starting Line up...? Offered little to no help to Salah and Mane, by way of bring them into the game, with passes or holding the ball up. Seemed more intrested in going down at the slightest touch.

Mane, recieved little to no help from Tsimkas with runs pass Mane drawing players away as Robbo would have done.

Salah not benefitting from Mane not been able to make runs and drawing in players, and the lack of any help from Origi in terms of touch, Lay off's or vision

Some here don't really rate Minamino, but surely he would have offered more than Origi, and If Klopp wanted to rest Bobby.

But Klopp should have started either Jota, Or Bobby Firmino

Klopp has to learn from this, and especially that Origi needs to be moved on in the January window Shaqiri too
