Liverpool the most profitable selling club in Europe since 2010

Fuck this. We should be able to keep our best players.

Unless you really pay big money in wages or offer the opportunity to win medals every season the best players will always be difficult to hold onto. We don't pay anything like City Chelsea Utd in terms of top wage earners and we have been outside the CL more often than not since 2010. It's not that surprising, we are in pretty much the same boat as Arsenal and Spurs in that regard, another club can always come in with a a bigger offer.

Nearly half of it is from selling three players who were deemed among our best, the rest is from buying shite and selling shite.

We've got a lot better at getting our money back on players, cf Benteke, El Zhar, etc, but it's not a great trend to be getting into, because the turnover of poor players going all the way back to Houllier is remarkable. People used to defend Rafa because he made his money back on his poor signings, so because we weren't operating at a loss on them, they were deemed good business. It's not really good business when that same money is continuously reinvested with the same haphazard results.

As a side note, I don't really have a problem with our net spend, we've accumulated and invested enough each season to be having some success, I don't think we have to be on a par with United's spending, or City's/Chelsea's, we just need to be better at it, which has always been the case.

The way I see it, we've built a massive stand and are continuing to invest in the stadium without bankrupting the club. Klopp has not been prevented from spending either. This isn't something to be proud of, but it is better than our club being in dire financial straits. The club is in great shape and the infrastructure to rival other elite teams is coming into place. I'm very positive about the future.

Commonly know as the "Arsenal argument"
While it does have some merit I am not a huge fan.

I know what you're saying mate, but I think when we start winning trophies this changes. Klopp splurged over 30m on Mane without a second thought, Wenger wouldn't have done that deal. Klopp could have spent more in the Summer but he couldn't get the players he wanted. All of those big transfers were mainly selling on players we didn't want (Benteke) or where the offer allowed us to strengthen and get rid of a wantaway player (eg. Sterling). The Suarez transfer sticks in the craw, but I doubt any team in England could have kept him when Barca came knocking. Spurs are well up this table too, and there's little doubt that they became a much stronger team in the wake of selling Bale. I'm not concerned.

For all the talk of not spending much, there were only 12 clubs in Europe who spent more.
I actually like the fact that Klopp wont spend just for the sake of it, if a preferred player isnt available.
That sort of approach would have saved us a lot of money in the past.

Have we lost our best player(S) to sales?

Suarez went... And by all accounts it was fairly inevitable. Who else have we lost too transfers that we give a shit about?

This shows were getting good returns out of unwanted players, however they're not from the youth system so it's also showing were over paying for players that aren't good enough in the first place

I think a shit was given about Torres leaving, though that shit was rapidly re-ingested when it became clear what a bad fit he was there

And how many seasons have we been in the CL or top 4 since then????

Hmmmmm

Correlation

And one that could be looked at from two angles:

1) Good players join clubs that are in the CL/ win trophies/ can challenge for titles.
2) Good players don't leave clubs that are in the Cl/ win trophies/ can challenge for titles.

The opposite of the above is true for bad players.

Good players are expensive to buy, and cost a lot in wages. You need more good players than bad players in your team if you want to win trophies.

Suarez played for Liverpool for four seasons.
Lucas has played for Liverpool for 10 seasons.

Alonso, Torres, Mascherano, Owen.

Not saying we lost all those players "to sales" - whatever that means - but they left and were replaced by worse players. Or have never been replaced at all.

And if Gerrard hadn't been an LFC fan and scouser, he'd have left years before he did. And even then he almost did twice.

So every single one of our genuinely world class footballers - bar Gerrard - has left.

And this isn't about being a selling club. It's about not being a club who is capable of keeping those players. Not the same thing.

I have a real problem with the title of the thread + the use of the term "Profitable" in the article.

It should read, Liverpool are the team who have received the most income from sales from players since 2010.

What the article totally ignores is: How much expenditure we paid out (and indeed each club) since 2010
And if you want to go a step further, what is the net profit/loss per club.
Average Income per player sold
Average Expenditure per player bought

Stupid article only looking at something from one angle, and misuse of the word Profit.

I normally have better in the house but it was 9 euro for a crate of 24 Dutch 33 cl bottles.

You are forgiven - but I'll be watching you closely to make sure don't continue to compromise quality for pennies.
