Liverpool Keen On Snapping Up Real Madrid Veteran Guti
by Christian Bailey on April 9th, 2010

Rafa Benitez is preparing to raid Real Madrid this summer to snap up battling midfielder Guti. The 33 year old Spanish international is reportedly a target of several Premier League sides including Tottenham and Manchester City but Liverpool hope that there plethora of fellow Spaniards will give them the edge when it comes to persuading the player to try a new challenge.

After 15 successful years at the Bernabeu Guti is looking to try something new and has stated that he hopes that his club will look kindly on allowing him to leave on a nominal fee as he enters the final year of his Madrista contract.

‘Right now there is no possibility that I will stay at Madrid,’ Guti told Onda Madrid radio station. ‘This will be my last Clasico [against Barcelona].
‘I have a year left on my contract but I think we can reach an understanding. I am sure that they will understand that my best option is to go.â€

Liverpool are looking at bringing in new additions in the summer on a shoestring budget and Rafa believes he can win the race for the vastly experienced one club man. Guti is known to favour a move to the Premier League for one last big pay day and will be excited to team up with fellow Spaniards Pepe Reina, Fernando Torres and Albert Riera and will be more open to a move to Anfield if Rafa guides the club to a Champions League spot for next term.

Benitez is hoping to strengthen his midfield this summer having seen new signing Alberto Aquilani struggle to get a game and arguably still yet to properly replace talismanic midfielder Xabi Alonso. A move for Guti may well only be a short term solution but his knowledge and passion for the game can only serve to assist the club in its push to recapture their glory days.

No thanks. It'll be Aimar and Saviola next.

Haha. Exactly.

We should not be looking to get Real's cast offs like Guti or Raul. They are well past their prime. We should rather invest time in our young guns and give them playing time to speed up their development.

This is the sort of signing that would appeal in the Jan transfer window. When we need some more legs to cover for possible extra fixture burden because we are doing well as it is.

If we can find a considerable upgrade on Lucas, then we can look at getting Guti in to replace Lucas in the squad.

In his day, he was far superior to Lucas. But now the difference is probably marginal, and Lucas has room to improve. Not to mention the possibility that Guti may not have it in him to put in the leg work any more, and also the possibility that he may not adapt.

One of Lucas and Guti can possibly have a space in the squad, but we need to improve much more on the starting CM slot. At the very least we need to replace Gerrard for the AM/second striket role, and bring Gerrard back in to play CM from the start of the pre-season. So we will have to be disappointed if this going to be the only CM addition and that we choose to retain Lucas. As this will be yet another crab step......but we don't know who else is coming in, so i'm reserving judgement.

Did i use the word possibilities too many times?

Guti would be a good squad player, also would help on the training ground too, apparantly he is technically superior than nearly all of the galacticos. Money would be an issue though, wouldnt spend more than £5 million and would not want to pay silly wages either.

one would think that after 15 yrs of service real would waive any fee...

Surely the only position he could play is Gerrard's. He's not suited to central midfield in the Premiership.

He played as their DM, just before and just after Graveson. He has played pretty much everywhere for that Madrid team, he is a bit like Gerrard in that way.

I'm sure he can play CM with masher as his partner. He used to be quite a hard working character too...not sure how much more he has in his tank.

Definately take him on a free them.

Play Guti behind Torres and push Stevie next to Mascherano. Sorted.
I've wathced a few times this season, and I'm impressed by his techincal skills and vision. We could really need his creativity.

For free it would be a great signing.

There's a reason why there aren't many 33 year old outfield players in the Premiership.

A twighlight season or two could be worth the gamble.

Depends on the player. Sir Gary Mac springs to mind.

I'd take him over Raul, despite Raul's goalscoring record, I think his position relies less on pace and his vision is excellent. I doubt he could play one of the two central midfield roles over here though, he'd be more likely to play the hole, for which we already have Gerrard, Yossi and some other guy.

He's good but a fucking nutjob. I'd take him only on a free and not for silly wages.

Here's something to get you talking...

Arshavin has registered his son in a school in Liverpool 😱
[/quote]

Really? How's that come about then? We could never afford him, though, so don't get too worried yet.
