LIVERPOOL are planning a stunning £15million summer swoop for Leighton Baines – despite a hands-off warning from Everton.
But any raid could see young Liverpool full-back Martin Kelly heading for the Anfield exit door.
Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish sees England star Baines as the man to solve their left-back woes and provide the ammunition for 6ft 3ins hitman Andy Carroll.
Kop Director of Football Damien Comolli has already contacted their Merseyside rivals over a possible end-of-season switch – but Everton vowed to block any deal.
Liverpool believe an offer topping £15m would force a reluctant sale, though sources close to Baines, 26, say the boyhood Blue would not want to cross Stanley Park for fear of enraging fans.
It would be the most controversial deal between the clubs since Nick Barmby’s switch 11 years ago.
But he may not have a choice if David Moyes’ cash-strapped club accept a large offer.
Talk of the shock swoop has unsettled the Reds’ rising star right-back Kelly, 20. He fears Glen Johnson – currently filling in at left-back – would be deemed first-choice and wants assurances over his future from Dalglish.
Dalglish sees him as a key player but faces a tough task in keeping the youngster and Johnson happy.
Liverpool are desperate to bring in a top-class left-back after Paul Konchesky flopped and they failed to re-sign Steven Warnock from Aston Villa in January.
Newcastle’s Jose Enrique is also on their radar.
Baines grew up in Kirkby, a tough district of Liverpool, dreaming of playing for one of the city’s big clubs. Everton signed him from today’s opponents Wigan for £6million in July 2007, having released him twice as a teenager.
‘I used to play in midfield and up front. It was only when I went to Wigan I became a left back. I played in all the usual avenues: school, representative, Sunday league. I was at Everton until I was 12 but was released at the same time as Phil Jagielka and Joey Barton.
‘I played Sunday league for a team called Key Ways. We had good players like Ryan Taylor (now at Newcastle) and David Nugent (Portsmouth). When I was 15, I knew I had to try to get a club, as I was coming towards the end of school.
‘I went back to Everton for a trial but they let me go again. I then went to Liverpool but they had a left back and stuck with him. It felt like the end of the world.
‘Everyone in your family and your friends are either Red or Blue. I came home that day and thought that was it. To be told I was not good enough was a massive blow. From there I went to Wolves and played a trial match.
‘They were happy with me and wanted me to come back but at the same time I played a couple of games for Wigan and they wanted me to sign. Geographically it was easier for my parents, so that’s where I went and where I stayed.’
MANCHESTER City are ready to offer Everton £20million – and Wayne Bridge – for full-back Leighton Baines.
Arsenal, Liverpool and Bayern Munich have all been monitoring the 26-year-old defender, but City hope their huge bid blows the opposition out of the water.
City boss Roberto Mancini has decided that Baines , who is pushing Ashley Cole for a regular spot in the England side, can help take the Eastlands club on to a higher level.
Baines is a year into a five-year contract at Goodison Park, but City hope the chance of a bigger pay packet – plus Champions League football – will appeal.
City also know that Everton are due to make payments to their bank in the summer. That will leave them hard pressed to resist big offers for their stars, but boss David Moyes (left) doesn’t want to lose any main members of his squad.
Relations between Everton and City were strained over Joleon Lescott’s £24m move to Eastlands.
But City are confident that, as in the case of Lescott, their mountain of cash will win the day in their quest for Baines.
Meanwhile, Manchester United are eying Everton’s England Under 21 star Jack Rodwell.
ARSENAL are ready to fight Manchester City and Liverpool for Everton full-back Leighton Baines.
With Gael Clichy looking likely to leave the Emirates in the summer, boss Arsene Wenger has set his sights on England international Baines.
The Everton star has had an outstanding season but Arsenal face stiff competition for his signature.
Goodison Park chiefs have already dismissed a £12.5m cash offer from City as derisory. But the ambitious Eastlands club are willing to go to £20m or more and to throw former England left back Wayne Bridge into the deal.
Liverpool are also tracking Baines but the fact Arsenal are even considering entering the battle suggests Wenger is willing to loosen the purse strings this year.
Clichy came close to leaving for Italy last summer and has just a year left on his contract. The Emirates board would rather sell him than let him leave for nothing next year.
Everton boss David Moyes has been told that he will have to sell to buy again this summer, but will not let Baines, 26, go on the cheap.
Leighton Baines added lustre to an already glittering campaign by claiming a glorious treble at Everton’s 6th Annual End of Season Awards.
The left back gained recognition from supporters and teammates alike as he was named the Club’s Player of the Season and Players’ Player of the Season, while also winning the Goal of the Season Award.
Hotly tipped for top honours the 26-year-old, an ever-present this term, was rewarded for a campaign built on endeavour, rich in consistency yet bejewelled with frequent flashes of individual brilliance.
Accepting his prizes in front of his teammates and a host of Everton luminaries in the glamorous surrounds of the BT Convention Centre on Liverpool’s Waterfront, a typically bashful Baines admitted he was taken aback.
"In a way it is almost embarrassing," he said. "If not then certainly humbling.
"I'm a bit speechless to be honest. It's mind-blowing to have been up on stage three times tonight. I don't know what else to say really.
"To win the Players' Player two years in a row shows I must be making a few friends. I have been at the Club for four years now and they are not just my teammates but my mates as well.
"This is a great honour and I can only say a big thank you to everyone - every player, each member of the coaching staff and, of course, every single fan."
If receiving the two top individual awards on offer wasn't enough, Baines completed a hat-trick when his stunning last-gasp free-kick against Chelsea in the FA Cup was voted the goal of the season, narrowly eclipsing Diniyar Bilyaletdinov's rasping effort against Wolves.
Of his special strike, Baines added: "I didn't really feel any pressure because it was like a free hit - I had nothing to lose. Afterwards, though, when everyone came running up to me, I felt like I was floating for a while."
In fact, Baines’ seven goals this term can’t be bettered by another defender in the Premier League, while his wonderfully dexterous left foot has provided a constant stream of goalscoring opportunities for his teammates.
His attacking flair and creative streak have manifested in 11 assists – a total only bettered by Luis Nani, Didier Drogba and Cesc Fabregas.
Yet in terms of supplying goals, no Premier League defender can get near the Everton man, while Barcelona’s Dani Alves (14 assists) is the only defender across Europe’s top leagues with a superior rate.
His classy displays have, of course, seen him regain favour with England coach Fabio Capello, with caps against Denmark and Ghana crowning a truly wonderful season for the Kirkby-born player.
