Liverpool Football Club Statement on Matip

Status
Not open for further replies.
Liverpool are considering challenging Fifa and playing Joel Matip against Plymouth Argyle in the FA Cup.

Selecting Matip will force the governing body to adjudicate on whether the defender is eligible to play for his club while his former international country, Cameroon, participate in the African Nations Cup.

Liverpool have been left infuriated by Fifa’s refusal to offer guidance on the matter. Fifa have responded by quoting their rules regarding players’ availability, in which it makes it clear if a player is selected by his association he is obliged to accept his selection and he can not play for his club.

As far as Liverpool are concerned, Matip has not been available for Cameroon since September, 2015 when he made it known he no longer wished to be under consideration. That assertion was repeated earlier this season.

Matip was not named in the Cameroon squad for the Africa Cup of Nations, but Liverpool received no clarification as to whether that means he can play for his club.

Fifa’s current stance has done nothing to resolve the impasse.

“We can confirm that Liverpool FC contacted Fifa about the matter,” a Fifa spokesman responded.

“Our services answered by directing the club to the applicable provisions.”

The statement continued: “A player who has been called up by his association for one of its representative teams is, unless otherwise agreed by the relevant association, not entitled to play for the club with which he is registered during the period for which he has been released or should have been released pursuant to the provisions of this annexe, plus an additional period of five days.”

Should Liverpool play Matip in the FA Cup Third Round replay, it is possible they will face sanctions.

“Fifa also indicated that any potential violation of the applicable provisions would need to be investigated by the Fifa Disciplinary Committee,” read the statement.

The decision is now for Liverpool and manager Jurgen Klopp. As things stand, they are opting not to play Matip despite being in the dark as to whether he is available.

That could continue until the end of the Africa Cup of Nations, plus an additional five days once Cameroon are out of the competition. However, Liverpool do not want to wait so long.

The alternative is they can invite a challenge by selecting Matip and producing evidence that demonstrates his retirement from international football was – until the last few weeks – accepted by Cameroon.

We should play him in the FA cup game to force their hand.

And hopefully, any possible sanctions would be for that competition only.....

Thats what I thought. It sounds like FIFA are saying; "sort it out yourselves, we'll only look into it if the rules are actually breached". Which is hilariously insane.
I'd risk playing him in the FA cup. The Cameroonian FA wont change their minds which leaves us with trying this or waiting 6 games.

Although, if playing him in the Fa cup does kickstart whatever process is involved at FIFA, I'd be surprised if it was resolved quickly enough to influence the use of him in the Premiership or otherwise.

It might take weeks. I dunno, it's a mess innit?

Knowing how FIFA works, it will probably be resolved on the day the AFCON ends.
Its a mess alright. The surprising part is that retiring from international football is about as easy as getting out of your military duty in North Korea.

He could show up, then start tweeting everything that happens inside the training sessions and dressing room, the team sheet, the tactics, insult some players, call the coach a hijo de puta who has no clue what he is doing. He'll soon be retired.

Aye.
It's potentially 6 more games he could miss.
That's if Cameron make it to the final.

What exactly do the Cameroon FA have to gain from preventing him playing for us? Is their president a manc?

He doesnt have a ban though. We havent gotten a clarification from FIFA that he can play, while Cameroon wants him to sit out the entire length of the AFCON.

WE should fly him to the Isle Of Man, he should renounce his Cameroon heritage, declare himself an IOM'er now and we drop them 100k to just completely overlook him from now on for squad selection. It's no more ludicrous than FIFA are.

He wasn't even name in the final 23, surely that means he wasn't called up? Cameroon cant have it both ways, if they dont want him to play then they should name in the squad and play with 22 players.

All so frustrating. He could really make a difference over the coming weeks. And to be sat playing for neither club nor country...

Klopp:
[article]I haven’t had this situation many times or anything similar.

I don’t want to blame anybody but our supporters deserve to know about the process.

In this moment, we are sure we have done nothing wrong and neither has Joel.

He hasn’t played for Cameroon since 2015 and hasn’t been a national player.

He could not play for them because he isn’t in the squad but now he cannot 100 percent play for us.

I would consider to line him up tomorrow but I don’t know if I can.

He isn’t happy. I told him before the United game that I can’t pick him.

We are not the only club. Schalke have a similar problem and so do West Brom, maybe Ajax too.

It is really difficult to get in contact with the people.

It is important and we have to wait for a fit player who wasn’t playing for Cameroon for 15-16 months. It is difficult to accept.

It would make perfect sense from a sport side.

FIFA told us that next Friday they will decide to open a case about him or not.

They have told us it would then be between 7-10 days if we get a decision.

From January 2, it could be up to eight games, had he been fit. If the result is what we think it will be, he would have missed eight games for doing nothing wrong.

I accept rules in life but they should base it on human sense. In this case, we cannot do more. It is really hard.

Hire dantes? Matip will have retired before the case finished.

That's not the point. The point would be that once the case finally did finish, FIFA would be laying lifeless upon the floor under my foot.

This is why my cases take so long, because the naïve judge skips along through the daisy field to his chambers, not a care in the world, loves life, but then as he begins to read the submissions then everything changes. It of course takes time for the judge to reconcile himself to the inevitability of what must happen, for him to go through every possible alley, looking for some way out, with iron shutters slamming down each time, until finally, he gives up, he steps away, and then @dantes is free to do what he must to FIFA.

So from his presser, basically Fifa (have told the club) they will decide from NEXT friday whether or not to open a case....

If they do, he won't be eligible until even after the AFCON is finished.

If they don't, he will be eligible to play against Chelsea @ home.

Basically Klopp says he will think about risking Matip for tomorrow.

Either way, FUCK FIFA

Take it to CAS and be done with it and if that fails the European courts
We seem to be a club that happily takes it up the arse.

  • The Sakho situation
  • Matip
  • To some extent the Suarez biting incident. How kicking someone in the head or punching someone isn't deemed to be more extreme than a little nibble.

Very harsh on us. Much beyond our power.

Fantastic News,

All that's left now is for justice, hopefully Cameroon can get knocked out the competition early.
