Riise was more than 'good enough'.
He was part of our tightest defence in the last decade and was a fine, albeit slightly limited, footballer, who takes much too stick on here.

There were better out there than Riise at the time, and we didn't buy any of them; yet we chose to sell him and not adequately replace him.
The fact that every other LB since we left has either been injury-prone or shite doesn't mean he should be shown in a greater light.

He was a great player in his heyday yeah, but he had a shit last season or so and fully merited replacing.
As has been said many times by many people, the problem was not in selling Riise, because, despite his obvious talents, we needed someone better.
The problem was in trying to replace him with a mixture of Aurelio, Dosenna & Insua.
Aurelio was arguably a better player - certainly more cultured - but too injury prone.
Dosenna was a horrendous decision and Insua is not good enough to take on the responsibility of first team regular.
Given that on Insua remains now, and Benitez has admitted that he played too much, it seems absolutely6 certain that we'll sign a new left back.
The problem was in trying to replace him with a mixture of Aurelio, Dosenna & Insua.
