Rafael Benítez must decide upon the future of young Liverpool striker Krisztian Nemeth or risk losing him this summer, according to the player's agent.

Tibor Pataky told Goal.com UK that 21-year-old Nemeth - who is currently on loan at Greek side AEK Athens - would be happy to return to Anfield at the end of the season, but hinted at interest from across Europe.

"It is no secret that AEK are happy with the boy," he said, "Of course they are; he is a fantastic talent and an excellent prospect. But if they wish to extend his loan contract then they will need to speak with Liverpool.

"If every party can agree, then it is not impossible that Krisztian can extend his contract to stay in Athens for another season."

"Our treatment from Liverpool from day one has been fantastic, and as a result Krisztian wishes to do what Mr Benitez wants."

"But we have had other serious interest from clubs in Europe - from Italy and from Spain - so it is up to Liverpool to decide what is best for them and for us."

Nemeth has made 13 appearances for AEK this season, scoring three goals, and reports earlier this week suggested that the Greek side were seeking to extend the Hungarian Under-21 star's loan deal by another season.

Pataky admits that such a deal could well take place if all parties are satisfied, but also hinted at further interest from clubs across the continent.

Benitez faces a tough decision on Nemeth, after a season littered with complaints about a lack of striking depth beyond Spanish star Fernando Torres, who has endured an injury-disrupted campaign. Young Frenchman David Ngog has often been left to lead the line alone at Anfield, despite his relative lack of experience.

Serbian forward Milan Jovanovic is expected to join from Standard Liege on a free transfer in the summer, but Nemeth - who boasts a prolific goalscoring record at reserve level for Liverpool, as well as for Hungary's Under 19 and Under 21 sides - would add to Benitez's options.

Pataky says the player has enjoyed his season at Athens, but stressed that Liverpool is the club at which he wishes to succeed.

"Krisztian has enjoyed very much his time in Greece," he revealed, "Of course the weather is another issue - there is much less rain than there is in Liverpool - but Krisztian joined AEK first and foremost for football reasons.

"He is a sensible boy and he understands why he was allowed to leave Liverpool on loan. He went to Athens to pick up experience and to develop as a footballer, and it has been a great opportunity for him, one that he has enjoyed.

"But though AEK are a huge club in Greece, Liverpool are Liverpool."

Re: Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez must make decision on young striker Krisztian Neme

Another forgotten starlet. He'll be sold for ten tracksuits and some shin pads any day now.

It's not a tough decision at all. We need strikers. He is a young, promising one. So keep him and give him a chance. What's difficult in that?

Given how much of a totally hapless div Eggnog is, I think I'd like to see Nemeth back

He can hardly be worse

Thirteen appearences and three goals doesn't suggest to me that this is necessarily true.

It's a shame he hasn't exploded in Greece the way some of us thought he would. Whether that's just down to injuries, I don't know - but, as said, 3 in 13 in a fairly weak league is far from proof positive that he deserves to be in our first-team squad.

Only 13 appearances (including subs?) suggests an injury ravaged season, and means it is all pretty inconclusive.

You're only as good as the team around you, and they were turned over by everton twice. In a better side he MIGHT do better

I'm led to believe that Nemeth has shown far more at reserve level than N'gog has in his few appearences.

Either way, sending him out on loan hasn't been great for him or ourselves. I hope he comes back and gets an opportunity. He would have killed for half the game time N'gog has received this year.

How much of him have you seen, Whitey? I've only caught a half-dozen or so clips, but I've generally been impressed by what I've seen. I'm not one of those who have written N'Gog off, as I actually think he has some ability, but he's suffered from being a boy sent to do a man's job, Bearing also in mind the fact that - at the moment anyway - we're boracic, I'd have thought Nemeth was worth a go.

Or alternatively he just isn't that great and only merited occasional time on the pitch

He's been pretty good when called upon

By us? Like when?

He played during the Singapore friendly; thought he looked tidy.

Good poachers instincts.

Guess he must have regressed :-\

Unlikely, I'd have though, given that AEK want to keep him on.

He did score a couple of goals for Hungary in the Youth (under 20 was it?) World Cup but his conversion to chance ratio wasn't exactly encouraging and to be fair I don't think he was even Hungary's best player.

He's spent the year with constant niggling injuries and as such hasn't played as much as they'd like.

He started the season in fine form, and I'm told the Greeks rate him quite highly.

No sign of us shipping out Ngog just yet and didn't El Zahr get a new contract last year.

Besides, it his his agent talking and claiming that AEK want to hold on to him for another year and we all know how trustworthy agents are, especially when it comes to contract renewal time.

45 mins here and there.

Ive just never been a fan. He isn't the strongest, isn't the quickest and isn't the most clinical in goal. He has decent movement and looks to get involved but id expect prem defenders to monster him.

I don't want him back here as a first teamer and i think bringing him back as a reserve wouldn't allow Dalla Valle (who looks stronger and a better finisher) chance to develop.

Anyone who watched him regularly couldn't fail to be impressed. He's got a bit of everything, creative, good movement and confidence on the ball, and I'd see him more as a between the lines player than an out-an-out striker despite him having a fantastic record for the ressies.

Whether he's capable of stepping up, I'm not sure, but I think it would have been worth having him about this season.

I dunno Doc.
Patcheco seems to be exactly that type of player only better, and he hardly got a look in this season, despite all our troubles.

He may well have been able to do a job for us this season as you say, but I doubt if he would have got the opportunity to do so.

Pacheco may turn out to be better than Nemeth, but Nemeth was a much more mature player last time I saw them play. Nemeth seemed to make good decisions much more often and was consequently more dangerous.
That said, you're probably right that he'd have barely been used.
