Liverpool are apparently keen on bringing Spanish legend Raul to Anfield. Rafa Benitez has reportedly sent out the feelers on a potential bid to snap up the Real Madrid veteran this summer. Having played his entire professional career at the Bernabeu Benitez is hoping to secure the 32 year old for free in the hopes that the striker would be interested in one final pay day before hanging up his well worn boots.

Having collected just about every winners medal available to him Raul may well be keen on trying a new challenge before calling time on a career that has seen him net an incredible 311 goals for the La Liga giants and Rafa is known to be an admirer of the Spanish international from when his Valencia side came up against the Madridsta.

The fact that Liverpool already have a plethora of fellow countrymen may also help sway Raul into making a sensational move to Merseyside. The possibility to forming a partnership with current Spanish favourite Fernando Torres, and former Atletico Madrid man, may also prove very tempting and an added bonus for the financially burdened club is that such a move wouldn’t break the bank given the players age and the willingness of Real Madrid to grant the wishes of a player who has served them so well for 16 years.

Liverpool could snap up Raul on a free this summer but could cost as much as £8m a year in wages, so anyone thinking that such a move would be purely a commercial one should remember that last season, even in his advancing years, Raul netted 24 goals, not a bad tally for a player in the autumn of his career.

Dont want him.

Wages demands too high for a slow ageing Spanish player. The parallels with Morientes are not unfounded. He may be able to score in Spain but I doubt he'll be able to reproduce any of that form here.

For some reason, I thought he was 35. He's still a good player, but I just don't see the point of this signing.

He's always been overrated and as soon as he got jibbed by Spain they started looking like the force they always should have been.

And if we're on the hunt for free transfer strikers, why aren't we in for Kevin Kuranyi??

Top scorer in Germany, 6"3 and 28 years old. Great signing... Would shite goals for us.

overrated?

overrated?

He's one of, if not the best striker(s) in the World in the last 20 years.

His goals record in any competition, his workrate, his attitude, his ability, technique, how he's respected by his peers, etc etc.

I'd listen to arguments about his age being a determining factor on us being interested or not, but not in any way on Earth is Raul overrated. If anything, it's the exact opposite.

Is correct. However, this has Morientes 2 written all over it so no thanks.

Overrated I say- and by this I mean, he's been living on reputation for years.

Respected by his peers? He gets respect partly because he is a Madrid institution, and the epitome of everything wrong with 'player power'. So 'respected' that it took a Spanish coach with cojones to decide to leave him out, such was his malignant and divisive influence in a perennially losing international team. Yes, he has been a great player in the past, but he has been nothing like the Raul of late teens and early to mid-20s for many many moons.

NO desire for him at all. 5 years past his best. I'd rather have any of his other strike partners from Madrid.

I think some of you are underestimating what he's done recently. This seasons stats dont read so nicely, but I'd put that down to lack of games, his goals per minute still equates to about 1 in 3.

He is past his best, but he could still do a job for us. He's certainly a better option than some players we have. Whether we could afford his wages is another matter.

Well he's more likely to take his chances than Wash, I suppose. I wouldn't necessarily be against this, as long as he doesn't expect to start every week and as long as we don't give him a silly contract.

I'd rather we signed Robbie again.
Exactly.

Raul is a kind of Spanish Robbie Fowler and he is now just like Fowler was in his declining days.

I would rather see Rafa give Pacheco a chance than mess around like that.

10 years past his best.

A fantastic striker who in his prime was up there with the best in the world but he's a nothing player now.

I have no idea how he's done this season but some of you are crazy suggesting he's 5 or 10 years past it or whatever.

He's still been scoring a plenty when he's played in the past few seasons.

I'm not sure we should go for this but I'm really surprised at the lack of respect for, clearly, one of the best strikers of the modern age. He had a dip, for one season, about 7 years ago and people seem to think he's been shit since. If you'd been watching, not reading the papers or the internet, you'd think otherwise.

Bizarre.

Exactly.

Some of the comments here are fucking mental.

"A Spanish Robbie Fowler" - He's a better player and goalscorer than Fowler ever was.

"Finished 10 years ago" - He's averaged over 20 goals a season every season in the last 10 years.

He was a fantastic player. He's still quite a good one. Is he one we should be looking seriously at? Had this been last summer, maybe one or two pieces of the puzzle away... yeah, I could go for that. Now that we look a little further away I'd rather see that wage packet go towards a younger talent.

rather him than gudjohnsen though.

this news seems like bollocks to me, but dunno why the picture of raul 7 on our jersey just won't go away.
