Liverpool agree €15m Elia deal

Liverpool have kick-started their January shopping after agreeing terms to sign Hamburg midfielder Eljero Elia for €15 million.

The Reds desperately need reinforcement after a disappointing first-half of the season which saw them end the year ninth in the Barclays Premier League.

A lack of width on both wings has been a well documented problem at Anfield.

And manager Roy Hodgson has pin-pointed the speedy Dutch international as the ideal man to remedy the problem.

The 23-year-old signed for Hamburg from FC Twente in 2009 and impressed in his first season at the Bundesliga club.

But he failed to maintain his form the following year and lost favour with coach Armin Veh as a result.

According to Hamburg daily Hamburger Morgenpost, Elia is already on his way out of the club after agreeing personal terms with the Liverpool.

The winger will cost the Anfield outfit €15 million.

So we're signing two wingers in January? I'm excited and pleasantly amazed if true.

Though that may change when I see them play, of course.

He looked good at the World Cup - and he is damn fast something we are desperately in need of. Imagine him and Torres breaking every time our opponents attack breaks down .... I'm sure teams would start to defend deeper (giving us more space in MF) than they do with Maxi / Cole & Kuyt !

I saw him come on against Scotland - he destroyed them and scored a well taken goal. Not seen much of him since.

I don't even know what the cunt looks like, give me a chance.

I don't know if this signing is 100% but we will be spending money this Jan, for deffo.

Exciting news if true. The lad is breathtakingly quick - think Thierry Henry in his pomp, and not a complete idiot like Babel either.

Maybe some of the more regular Bundesliga watchers could probably offer an insight as to how consistent he is?

I think its safe to assume E-double will be our greatest ever player.

You mean Double-E?

Cue, someone posting a pair.

Inside information?

Re: Liverpool agree €15m Elia deal

Spending money this January is a necessity, surely.

Plus it's the first window for the owners to demonstrate their credibility with more than words.

Keeping hands on their wallets

Is it £5m or 15m euros as there is huge difference. 15m euros for a player who is constantly injured is big massive mistake.

Whenever I've seen him play, it's been on the left.

I first mentioned him a couple years back after City played Twente in the UEFA Cup. He gave their defence a torrid time with his pace and skill. He looked a little rough around the edges, but very exciting. As I said in the other thread, I've not seen much of him for club in for some time, but I'd be delighted if we got him nonetheless.

Right I think..

So he's either gonna be our thierry henry or ryan babel mk.2
[/quote]

The latter is probably more likely given our record with wingers since Digger. Who's been any good since him bar Macca? I can't think of anyone who has delivered on even an average basis.

So if this Elia does come, then he won't have to do much to better most of the previous incumbents!
