LFC Loans No More?

Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Plenty of examples of where it has worked and plenty where it has failed, even out of the current batch.

We need to be more selective about which players we send on loan and which teams we send them to, but as always there will be mistakes.

Recent years have seen the situation escalate and become very confusing.
I think it can work but we seem to have tried using the idea as some sort of buy-to-let scheme. We buy these kids loan them out to cover their costs see if it works out - it usually doesn't and if it doesn't try and sell them on for at least what we paid.
I can't remember any roaring successes to be honest - has there been any?

Borini?

In recent years there haven't been any "roaring" successes,or at least not for us but Chelsea use the buy to let scheme with great success. Ferguson also benefited greatly from loan arrangements the whole way through his managerial career. Campbell has broke into the Arsenal team this year under the same system.

The reasons for our failure have been more to do with a lack of player quality in terms of both our youth players and our signings, and loans are not going to compensate for that.

In saying all that, the youth system has began to turn around recently and we have shown some signs of utilising the loan system better to enhance their prospect. Of the current batch, Canos, Ward, Vigouroux have all got a lot more game time and experience than they would have done here. Not to mention that the academy keepers are getting more game time because Ward and Vigouroux have left.

Jones, Stewart, Williams, McLaughlin were all getting game time until injuries.

Yesil and Alberto are getting opportunities to revive their careers (for different reasons).

It hasn't worked for Ojo, and hopefully he'll benefit mentally because of it. Some of the fans seem to think he was a big time Charlie, but he's young enough to learn from that. Kent has had a mixed season, but it was good experience that he wouldn't have got in our reserves.

We haven't had any world class youngster come through, and if we had they would have likely bypassed the loan system anyway and went straight into the team, like Fowler, Owen Gerrard etc. before them. To dismiss the loan system as a whole based on our failures is short sighted in my opinion.

Haha yes that really worked - back he came banging them in left right and centre - The Borini's and Ballotelli's of this world go on loan as no one will buy them

It works for Chelsea because they just buy players to stop other people getting them and can afford to spend big on young talent - they've let some gems slip through

It worked for Ibe, I suppose.

Depends how we are quantifying a successful loan spell. Hes come back and gone into the first team squad but his impact so far has been pretty minimal so its probably too early to judge. The thing he has on his side above anything else is people seem to want him to succeed, alot of younger players don't get shown the same patience

I'm sympathetic with Klopp's view on this, but the problem with keeping our kids at the club is that it'll only work if we don't do what we appear to be planning to do today in the cup. Thanks to the stupid reserve system now, the kids only play against kids, so they might have ability but they're painfully vulnerable to physical players once they get thrown on in a senior game. Of course, training with our own first teamers would help, but it will still require a bit more patience to let them evolve. But I think the loan system has been so carelessly abused in recent years I certainly welcome a more thoughtful policy.

But he's better than Sterling

I often think that the best way to gauge a player or a signing is to see the reaction of fans of other teams. I dont know any non Liverpool fan who doesnt find the whole 'Ibe is beter than Sterling' lauaghable. He seems like a good kid, and he may yet kick on and have a future with us, but so far its as ridiculous a comparison as the 'Welsh Xavi'

No, it isn't. That's as much of an exaggeration as the one you're (rightly) criticising. Sterling's defo ahead of Ibe, but not by that massive distance.

It might be a good idea in future to Loan some players to the likes of Tranmere and Southport or even Wrexham in the conference. They could then perhaps split their training time between us and the non league clubs as they are both local. If we pay all the wages for the player then these cash strapped clubs would bite our hands off for the chance to get some quality youngsters in. Only loaning them out for 2 or 3 months at at time might be an idea as well. It may not be the highest standard of football but it would certainly help to toughen them up by playing in competitive games.

Hmmm let me think

Rodgers plan (the guy who won fuck all and managed Championship level / Mid table teams)

Or Klopps plan (managed in Germany, won the league twice, CL finalist, Germany's youngsters won the world cup etc etc etc)....

Nah fuck it stay with Rodgers plan

#nocontest

We should be looking to loan youngsters to teams fighting for promotion from the Championship (if we can). The fact that we've been loaning players to League One and League Two over the years kind of proves what level a lot of them were at.

Hang on .. you took my statement seriously?

OK

Lovren is better than Alan Hansen ever was
Benteke is the new Ian Rush
Lucas is as underrated as Ronnie Whelan was
I wish we had Poulsen back as he was our best DM in the last 20 years
There's a pig farm down the road where they have to put nets over the fields to stop the livestock flying away

It works for Chelsea because they buy or acquire high end talent.
We go mid range, therefore it rarely works out for us.

Is the Sterling vs Ibe comparision serious?

There's exactly a year between them, a year ago, Sterling had been a first team player for two years, had played 100 games and scored 20 goals or so. Ibe is still jsut an occasional player, has played 40 games and scored 5 goals. There's no comparison between the two. Ibe is worth about 20m at the very most. Sterling is worth twice it.

Maybe a discussion could be had around potential, but certainly not around what they've actually achieved. Potential is always something that is hard to gauge and prove.

That's an idea - just keep it very loose so we bring them back anytime
