Left Wondering about a Back?

Brad Smith is an excellent prospect for us at left-back. Still eligible for the U18s but tearing it up for the U21 side (having come back from long-term injury) with aggressive, attacking left-back play. He'll be pushing for a first team spot within a couple of years.

This. Came back from injury with a bang, getting an assist and notching a superb goal on his comeback. Apparently did well in the recent U-21 game as well. High hopes on this one.

Cissokho is the best thing to ever happen to Jose Enrique.

Enrique's pretty fucking average, but I'm desperate to see him back in the side which is saying something about the complete fucking horrorshow that is Aly Cissokho.

He really is brutal and most of all he's a tackle diving, half-arsed cunt.

Good thing we loaned Cissokho and didnt buy him.
Luke Shaw would be ace but that wont happen. Need to find a gem outside the Premiership.

What I don't get with this loanee is the fact he has looked so weak on the ball for years now. Nothing have changed, why should it?

Can not wait to hear the logic behind it all but more is pointing to the fact he impressed Rodgers at Lyon and that he hopes too rekindle that player like he has done with others before him.

I still doubt it.

Evra
Cole
Baines
Schmelzer
Alba
Alaba
Coentrao
Marcelo
Vertonghen
Filipe Luis

Every single one of them better than Enrique. Piece of fucking piss too.

Vertonghen is a CB playing LB.

Schmelzer is on par with Enrique I would say, by no means "without a doubt better"

Would agree with the rest though.

Vertonghen is a better left back than Enrique regardless of whether he's a CB or not.

And Schmelzer is better. Far better.

You asked for your list and you got it mate. I could have listed plenty more too, mostly because Enrique is pretty fucking bang average.

How is Schmelzer better? He loses the ball far more often than Enrique, gets dribbled past significantly more often, and is a worse passer of the ball as well. He's a pretty decent crosser of the ball, but as far as our needs, that isn't anywhere near the highest priority.

And please do list more LB's, I'm curious who else you think would be an improvement.

Could this guy be an option:

[article]This one comes to us via the Daily Express website but its origins are in Spain as Estadio Deportivo claim that Manchester United are ready to compete with Real Madrid and Chelsea to sign Alberto Moreno, Sevilla's 21-year-old left-back who has just been capped by Spain. The bad news is that he has a £25m release clause. United will presumably offer £29m.[/article]

He is even blond too.

I don't watch that many games these days besides ours but I try and catch Ajax now and then.

Hence I know he is great potential. There may be others in Belgium and Ukraine who is better I just don't follow those Leagues.

@Roopy ?

When it comes to left backs there's no one in particular that has caught my eye.

The one player from last season which did was a youngster, Lucas Digne ... played for Lille but with PSG now.

Future left back for France, only a matter of time tbh.

I have seen him a couple of times actually at Lille, looks a good player indeed.

Yup.

In regards to left backs in general, regardless of age, I quite rate Felipe Luis (28) from Atletico Madrid. Very impressive over the past 2 seasons.

Gibbs?
I think he's been superb this season.

I'm not a huge Gibbs fan, but yeah - he's better than Enrique.

I do wonder what Whirly and others actually think of Enrique at times? What sort of player do you fucking think he is? He's a plod average left back who's been fortunate enough to have seen his stock risen since ole Bambi Cissokho flailed his way into the side.

We are llinked with Martin Montoya who is the Barca back up right back apparently

Enrique for me is not anywhere near as bad as you make out Ryan, he is not a world class player either.

He is a strong lad, obviously, and by no means easy to skip past for most wingers. He has got a rather good eye for the deep pass, which has resulted in at least 3 or 4 assists during the past year or so. He is also quite fast.

His main weakness is his positioning and at times sloppiness but imo we could do a lot worse. I agree with most LB on that list but what is much more relevant imo is how many LB in the Prem you'd have ahead of him. He is among the best in the league bar a couple when at his best.

We didn't get robbed on what we paid for him and of course we could do better.
But I bet not many could make a list of 10 players who we could realistically get that would be a serious improvement on Jose.

Which is a reflection of the quality of LB's in the league. He's only in the top few by default. Just because you're 4th or 5th best, doesn't make you great.

There are better LBs than Enrique, but he isn't poor by any stretch.

He is a bit like Ryan Babel.....he can be so much better in his position if he had a little bit more intelligence

The full backs on Ryans list are all better than Enrique, and there is probably a few more aswell.
The thing about Enrique is that when he's "switched" on he's a very good full back. Its just a shame its not very often and that he's got the footballing intelligence of a 10 year old girl.

He's a defender who can defend, as well as do enough in attack. he almost never gets dribbled past, makes good recovery runs, and is rarely at fault when we do concede, something that can't be said of any of our other fullbacks.

That's my main criticism of Glenjo, he might contribute to a couple goals over the course of a season, but it definitely feels like he is liable for way more, and the decision making just isn't there often.

Enrique plays a big part in the linkup play with Suarez and Coutinho, and typically plays the early ball. We might lose possession, but its typically in a position where we can't get countered on, unlike when Glenjo gets caught out.

Enrique is not as great defensively as you're making out, he's good at sticking his big arse and shoulders between the attacker and the ball, that's all.
