The second-round ties will be played across September 15/16 and Jürgen Klopp’s side will then take on the winners of the meeting between Bradford and Lincoln on either September 22 or 23

Our relationship with this competition has always been weird. For ages, no matter how well we did elsewhere, we'd generally bomb out of this really quickly. Then we suddenly seemed to work out how to win it without disrupting our season, so we went on a run where we seemed to win it amazingly regularly. Then we reverted to bombing out. Then with Roy and Ged we won it again but only by making it look way, way too hard. Then we won it with Kenny, also by making it seem like the hardest challenge in world football. Now we're back to bombing out. Take it away - it bores me.

It can be a useful way of giving the players who need game time a runout or two, but I agree it has all the allure of a fried cowpat.

It's a good chance for Jurgen to catch up on some box sets and new masturbation techniques.

I've long thought that all teams in European competition should play the 'B side' or players who haven't played more than X a month of games (which would cover established players returning from injury) with at least 6 of those being below 23.

Not only would that give other sides a better chance at progression, it'd help bed in those players with competitive football at the bigger sides too.

Just cancel it. Hardly anyone gives a damn about the thing, and this season there's just too much else for clubs to worry about.
Fully agree with that in many ways, but then I suppose the counter argument is that the lower league clubs who do depend on cash from this competition are going to need that even more this season.

I think that’s false. You can’t expect to get a decent tie when you’re a lower league team. You’ve got more chance of losing to a league 1 side than getting a tie at Anfield.

I get that point and it's a good one. But without fans, or many fans, will they get that much? If it's TV money, I'd give it all to them and let the big clubs play their kids. But if Sky et al behave in the ridiculous way they did over the post-lockdown league games, they'll probably claim a refund, the bastards.

Anyone know if this is on TV in the UK?

Can't imagine too many seniors will be involved....Maybe Shaqiri Grujic Origi if they're still around, Adrian Minamino and the kids.

I don't think it would be the end of the world to actually have this at the start of the season if it gives more playing time to the reserves, almost like an extension of pre season.

I read somewhere that the winners wont even qualify for the Europa League but a new 3rd tier european competition? The winners of the 3rd tier comp then qualifies for the Europa League the following season!

That devalues the competition even more. I didn’t think that was possible.

It’s because how quickly the fixtures are coming round. It gives clubs some preparation time to organise logistics.

Yep. And just to make the third tier European competition sound even more feeble, they have named it the Europa Conference League.

In practice the League Cup winners don't often get into Europe anyway.
