I'd much prefer us to be paying more in salary over a shorter period in contracts with players who are of this standard though.
Your players who are either top class, or could well be world class in future, tie them up for as long as possible. Coutinho, Firmino are examples of this imo.
All the players below that, Lallana, Henderson for example, give them a higher salary on a shorter term contract. Those players are more likely to slip below the standard we require during that period than the former group of players & therefore if they're on a longer contract we're more likely to be stuck with them regardless whether we want them or not.
I'd also be tempted to stick players with poor injury records on the secondary list, regardless of talent.
