I agree Keni, let's not beat around the bush, this is a fucking MAMMOTH opportunity to push our noses ahead of United. But let's not forget what we do have already, as much as Alonso was good last year, and we have to replace the small contribution from Keane, we do have players capable of chipping in with a few goals here and there, and despite feelings of trepidation, I don't think our spending is completely over yet.

Localny - regards Keane, hopefully Torres will have a fitter season (ditto Gerrard) and that would more than makeup for the lack of his goals. Voronin as said too will get a few and we should make at least one more addition before the transfer window closes. Who knows, maybe even Aquilani will get a few too.
Fingers crossed Marky. A Villa type signing would send up skyward in possibility though as well...and reinforce the morale after the loss of the choir boy. talk soon boyo

With 3 weeks to go to the end of the transfer season this thread is way way ahead of it's time !

Cheers fella, take it easy.

Villa or Silva would be dream stuff, I think Villa's asking price is well beyond us though and it's unusual for us to make a last minute big signing.

Don't want to sound defeatist either.. but as we haven't got Alonso, there's no guarantee that we'll be playing against 10men for a quarter of our league games this season.

Nor is there any guarantees we'll get as many penalties.. if we're to win it, we're really going to have to be very good and rely on a lot 'IFs' going our way again.

Miserable cunts.
We were second by 4 points last season and the team who beat us have sold 60 goals a season and the best player in the world.
Hargreaves = dead
Van der sar = injured
Neville = ancient
Brown = Injured
Scholes = old
Giggs = old
Owen = crocked
we had our two best players fit for just 12games together and STILL nearly won it. We've signed a 17m right back, we've got the best keeper in the league, 3 ace centre backs, the best dm in the world, the best am/cf in the world, the best striker in the world and one of the best rm's in the world.
And still you dont believe.

Chelsea

alonso pulled the strings last season. his replacement won't even start this season.

we're at least a player short and it isn't a defensive midfielder. buy one of silva, villa or aguero with the money rafa had for signing another player before he needed to sell (as he himself said after buying johnston) with the at least 10 million profit from selling alonso added to the 3.5 for arbeloa and the 3 for leto. we have at least 30-35 million left to spend this window unless g&h have took the money.

How dare you suggest that about GnH!!

The 60M initial repayment they have promised to pay before refinancing will definitely come out of their own pockets.

Not much attacking prowess, am afraid..
What are Torres, Gerrard, Kuyt, Babel, Benayoun and now Aquilani then?
Torres and Gerrard are excellent.....

Kuyt is a workhorse, but not good enough to be a league winner...

Babel - I would love him to be the solution, but it's 50/50

Beni - would love to be wrong, but he's hardly as good as what our opponents have

Acquiliani - I hope it works, but new to premiership and always injured ain't good...

Not meaning to be negative, but bar G and T, there's no clear match winners, no consistent flair players
I'm a little bit tired of this attitude. Dirk Kuyt is more than just graft - he is a quality footballer and anyone who can't see that either has shit in their eyes or hasn't watched us play over the last couple of seasons.

Just because he doesn't run at the speed of light or do fifteen stepovers before he makes his mind up what he's going to do, does not make him somehow inadequate.

Rafa hasn't even considered replacing him in the team this summer, which would indicate that he's held in fairly high esteem. All the focus has been elsewhere, and rightly so. We were only four points short of the league last season, a season in which Kuyt was a major contributor. If we'd had anything like the same return from Riera as we had from Kuyt, it may well have tipped the balance in our favour. Indeed, quality backup for Torres may also have turned a few draws into wins. What is clear, is that there are a number of problems with our squad that need addressing. What is also clear, is that Dirk Kuyt isn't one of them.

On a sidenote, even if you don't accept that he is more than just effort, a team is the sum of its parts. Saying he's 'not good enough to be a league winner' is ignoring the fact that there are ten other players on the pitch. I could quite easily say the same about Ji-Sung Park, but then he's got a Premiership Winners medal.

Great post Del.

Esp the part about Park. It annoys me so much when people say players arent good enough for us, completely ignoring teh fact all teams have players that are simply consistent performers little above average. They are the foundations that your star & flair players are built upon. Very few, if any top name players perform week in week out, yet the likes of Park & Kuyt perform to a level of consistency that enables the rest of their respective sides to shine.

The main problem with Kuyt is that when he is not in form, he is still one of the first names on the teamsheet. In that sense he cant be compared to Park who is a squad player.

He had a good season last year and made a big contribution (altho most of his goals came from up front which is almost always ignored - we didnt have a 10+ right winger last season) but in his mid season slump his place should have been under more threat in my opinion. Same goes for Riera.

I would LOVE to share Oncy's optimism, I really fucking would.
His description of the players he mentioned is pretty accurate but Giggs, Scholes & Nevile have not been regular starters for them for the last two seasons or so. VDS is old too but it's obviously less relevent for GK.

Nest season they will have

VDS
Brown Ferdinand Vidic Evra
Valencia Carrick Anderson Park
Rooney Berbatov

with

Foster
Rafael Evans O'Shea Fabio
Tosic Hargreaves Scholes Giggs
Owen Macheda

in reserve. That is still leaving guys like Fletcher, Nani, Welbeck, Gibson who can come in and out of the squad to cover injuries and suspension.
They are still the best team/squad in the league, we have closed the gap in the last year but they are still the favourites for next season.

And to be honest, that will suit us better.

They've got more experience and strength and depth

But our first team's more talented by a long way.

hand on heart, the lack of a decent replacement for Xabi (injury prone, inferior player), and the lack of a Torres alternative makes me think we're trying to wing it this year. This squad is NOT going to win the league.

If we made even one Silva or Villa signing, and gave ourselves a few more arrows in the quiver, I could believe, but currently it looks like last season was a fluke, with deadwood like Beniyoun etc having the season of their lives...not to be repeated.

Not sure why I am so negative, but am just comparing our squad to others. Not much attacking prowess, am afraid..

*cough* rubbish *cough*

How is it rubbish? Take of the blinkers, and let's debate

If you don't realise that being this pessimistic when the season hasn't even started is rubbish then it's not even worth debating.

I'm speculating boss that our squad is not as good as it needs to be. But if blinkered optimism is all you've got, so be it...

Personally, I think a club like ours should have more than one bleeding top class striker at it's disposal. And maybe a world class winger? Fingers crossed I'm wrong!

Rosco - totally turns my argument on it's head. Maybe I'm completely wrong...

Del - yes you never have a team of stars, but again, do you think Kuyt is the man to unlock a the bus parked in front of the goal. I'm just saying we have a lot of grafters, and not enough consistent flair performers. Babel, Beni, Riera, all occasionally v good, but not consistently...

No, I don't. Do I think he's good enough to be 1/11 of a title winning side? Absolutely. Kuyt is the least of our worries.

If Masha goes and we don't get a quick young dynamic holding player to replace him then we will win NOTHING this year. Don't assume that new attacking talent will get us the title, our midfield was probably one of the best if not the best in Europe, one part of that jisaw has gone, if another part goes we are going to struggle for 4th place let alone win the title.

Fabio is media "better than his brother" business. Well prove it then.

Tosic? Whoop de fucking do.

Macheda at this point is no more than Neil Mellor against Arsenal.
So do we.

I hope I'm wrong, but I think a helluva lot of people writing Utd off are gonna get their eye wiped. They'll perform as a more cohesive team this season now Ronaldo's gone & whilst that wont completely fill the void he'll leave they wont find themselves reliant upon goals that he supplied as much cos I doubt they'll get in those situations as often.

Like I said, I hope I'm wrong, but I highly doubt it.

United will still be there or thereabouts but I'm confident we'll finish above them this year.

We beat them home and away last year and they've weakend more than we have (if we have at all)

I think, as we've displayed under Rafa for a number of seasons, team cohesion doesn't win you the away matches at Fulham when they've got 10 men behind the ball.

Those match winners like Ronaldo win you those matches.

Sure, Utd will still be in the top 3 at the end of the season but Chelsea have a monster squad, I think it's Chelsea league title to lose. They've just nailed down Drogba for another few years,too - it's their league to lose, in my opinion.
