As a captain, leader and motivator etc, he was world class. I think as a player though, he wasn't the most gifted. You could say like the way Hendo or Milner are considered now. Not great technical footballers, but have other qualities that more than make up for it. Obviously Keane was a better leader than them, like.

Ps. I said he was overrated to get some bites, though I do believe it a bit.

Keane has my respect overall. I think he was better than people here realize, but of course he's never going to do 10 stepovers into the net. As for Saipan, it was awful, he was in the wrong - you can make that same point after the world cup, have your cake and eat it.

Sorry to intrude on your self-styled philosophical musings Dreamy, funny as they are, but I don't think many people here dispute that Roy Keane was a great player; he was not as dynamic or eye-catching as our own Gerrard, or Scholes, but in the mould of a midfield general type of player, he was brilliant; great passer, good tackler, tactically sound and made the players around him better.

These are two completely separate topics, and you know it...

1. The FAI are fucking clown shoes and they make my local pub team look well run. They're an embarrassment.

2. Every Irish player faced those same ridiculous conditions / situation. Only one walked out on his teammates. And on his country.

He had a choice... Lead a young team under tough circumstances and address things once the tournament was over, or abandon those he led. He chose the latter. He's no captain. He's no leader.

The Evra thing was at the very least fishy business, but when I saw him celebrate at the Nou Camp when he scored against us last season I was finally done with him. People say he has a competitive spirit but I think he gets as much joy on upsetting the opposition psychologically as he does nut-megging (West Brom) defenders.
