If Klopp is in charge of transfers rather than the committee does anyone else think it is strange that we don't appear to be linked to many German players or any that play in Germany.

He must have a list of players he was tracking at non inflated prices some of which must be available now or is it all going to happen in the summer.

When Benitez came in we seemed to target players from Spain based on his knowledge.

But Benitez didnt join mid season

and Benitez didn't had a committee, he had Parry. He only had to convince him if he wanted to sign a player not a whole committee.

About a 1/3 of Benitez signings were good. So I'm not sure that approach was much better

His opening spate of signings was really pretty impressive. Alonso, Reina, Garcia. Some notable successes in the following seasons, Mascher, Arbeloa, Torres. Arby apart, he had a real problem with FBs. Kromkamp, Degen, Dossena. The semi-permo croked Aurelio was a mitigated success.

It's January. He knows the best players are all tied up until the summer. I'm relieved there's not been the rash rush to sign up middling players from the manager's home league like there was when Houllier and Benitez came.

Yeah, I agree. His decision making seemed to be different after Pako left in 2007.

That's just about right, considering that 1/3 were keepers.

But seriously though, Benitez rarely failed with "big money signings" and was better in identifying players who suited his style.
During his time at the club several players turned potential into world class ability.
Some like Arbeloa, Crouch and Garcia made the national team. Crouch calls the time at Liverpool the peak of his career.

Damn it, you got me reminiscing now.

Although we have had some pretty extraordinary transfer coups in January windows. Suarez, Mascher, Coutinho, Agger, Studge and Skrtel. Lets not mention Jimmy Nail though.

I think if we are to really succeed as a club, we need to do what you mention in the above ('hit the homerun' with the big money signings, though Rafa had his fair share of duds ... Keane, Aquilani etc) AND ensure our mid level signings can contribute at a good level (i.e. no Voronins, Jovanovics etc etc).

I know, this is looking for utopia but when you look at our signings the last few years, you cannot but help wondering what the fuck we've been doing. So much money wasted etc.

Sign 1-2 world class players every window. Sign 2-3 good sqauddies every window. Let the youth fill in the rest of the holes. It worked for that twat in Mancland, and it can work for us too.

So much money wasted yes and the question is then why.

I'm not surprised that we wasted a lot of money because the manager couldn't veto a deal. Ayre was the one deciding how important a player was for the team. He had more to say about that than our manager.

How the fuck can you build a good squad when someone that don't have a clue about how to build a squad is in charge? Ayre don't have a clue how important a player is for the team.

Benteke is one example. He scored a lot of goals the reason to why we signed him. We didn't care if he would fit into the system or not.

The fit into the system should be priority one. If he do that then he will make other players better and the system better. This is what Ranieri done and the big reason to why they top the league.

"Only"? Parry gave him plenty of trouble over transfers. Even when a target was agreed, Parry took for ever to get it done.

I'm pretty sure we have been linked to loads, matip, hummels, gundogan, sané, xhaka are just a few. There's loads more
