Simon Mignolet will ‘100 per cent’ start for Liverpool in next match, says Jurgen Klopp

Jurgen Klopp says Simon Mignolet will ‘100 per cent’ return as Liverpool’s number one in the club’s next fixture, but he is likely to continue a rotation policy this season.

Klopp surprisingly left Mignolet out of his squad for the Arsenal victory and explained he wanted to keep his players mentally fresh for a lengthy campaign.

Loris Karius kept a clean sheet, and it is likely there will be similar decisions throughout the season given the manager’s belief in the quality of both stoppers. Mignolet will be selected against Manchester City on September 9.

“One hundred percent Simon plays against City,” said Klopp.

“Intensity for a goalkeeper is different. It is not physical. It is mental. We said before the season we wanted to have three really strong goalkeepers. Simon is a clear number one. He won the race in pre-season. You can always rely on him.

Simon Mignolet has not always been entirely convincing at Liverpool

“I told him yesterday and it was not that he gave me a hug and said thank you boss I agree with you, but I wanted to do it and give him this rest and have Loris in this game. Loris did a lot of good things. He was sometimes too cool but we all need to get used to playing football in close situations. He did a good job and I am happy with this.”

For the second time in four days, Liverpool’s were breathtaking in attack. It is that consistency that Klopp found most satisfying as he looks for his side to maintain standards at home and in Europe.

“We played an outstanding game against Hoffenheim and today we did the next step because we did it again,” he said.

“We need to learn we can do things like this every three or four days. We wanted to show it today and prove it ourselves and be spot on from the first second. We wanted to show our ambitions against a very strong side. The performance was perfect and the result is the result of the performance.”

Loris Karius replaced Mignolet against Arsenal

With Philippe Coutinho and Adam Lallana still injured, Liverpool’s squad looks more equipped to cope with significant absentees.

“If you miss too many you have not chance but we never think about who we miss,” said Klopp.

“We all know we cannot line up the same eleven for five or six months so we need to have opportunities to change. The players all looked so positive in training after the Hoffenheim game I thought ‘come on let’s try again’.”

Klopp also reserved praise for Joe Gomez, who is excelling again after a lengthy injury absence.

“Joe needed time to come back into shape,” said Klopp.

“It was a sStrong performance. I said to him after the game welcome to adult football because that was adult football. Really hard and physical.”

Loris did good, huh?

Interesting bit about rotation. We need a few more players in order to give our winters and midfielders a rest as well.

Look, I was as perplexed by this decision as anyone before the game and had it cost us, I would be wondering if Klopp had lost the plot. But after a win like this – and a clean sheet – you can't say anything other than that Klopp's decision was vindicated.

As for Karius' curious inability to get the ball out of his feet, I don't think it's a technical problem (he had no problem with that part of the game in Germany and was notably better with his feet than Mignolet last year, although Ming has improved since then). I think it's simply a case of nerves for a very ambitious young player starting the first game of the season. Goalkeepers often settle down after the first save of the game, the problem for Karius was that Arsenal were so incredibly piss-poor, that he didn't have anything at all to do all game, except kicking the ball. In hindsight, it makes all the sense in the world to give a chance to your back-up player against weak, hopeless opposition to get the nerves out before much sterner tests ahead.

I think it will only prove useful if Ming isn't shit next week.

Can I just say how lol it is you decide to rest your 1st choice GK against a shit team like Arsenal, and win 4-0?

It gave me the jitters to see the starting defensive line up last night but to be fair apart from one piece of dilly dallying dangerously on the ball Karius was fine....

I'm not a big fan of the punch out ball clearance I prefer it when the goaly catches the ball also and Karius is a puncher but he looked OK didn't he.

I understand Klopp feeling the need to keep him engaged by playing him and giving him game time but at the same time If I was Mignolet I would be rather pissed off. Granted it did take him 3 or 4 years to stop being a liability at the back but Mig won us points last season, on important occasions, and has been a reliable keeper for a good while, to get dropped out must be annoying for the lad. That said having him think that the competition exists may serve us well.

Gomez looked useful and it is nice to see him play himself back in after a horrific start injury wise to his LFC career. Moreno also didn't do anything wrong.... Its fair to say that last week was fucking great for us.

Klopp gambled but he won... Fair play.

Other players get rotated all the time. It's unusual for a keeper, but shouldn't be reason for a huff

I agree Tom but that's the point isn't it! It is unusual for a GK...

When Mig fought his way back in last season he played well and although Karius was SHITE maybe Mig needed the kick up the arse he got from being dropped.

He had clearly been working on his weaknesses at kicking but the main difference was he played with more confidence and worried less about errors and as a result didn't fill the defenders and fans with fear. Mig was a good keeper for us last season and I find it odd that he got dropped. I hope his being rested inspires him to keep playing well... but it is undoubtedly a gamble.

It's hinted in the Times this morning that Karius was really given a run-out to get him ready for playing in the Champions League games. Which would be crazy. Play him in the league cup and assess him there. Don't play him in important games until he shows he's ready.

There is a suggestion that Karius will play in the Champions League when the group stages start next month and that Klopp wanted to give a game to the German, whose last Liverpool appearance came in the FA Cup defeat against Wolverhampton Wanderers in January.

“There is nothing to say about this in the moment,” Klopp said. “We don’t talk about decisions like this before they come up.”

Barca used to play one keeper in the cups and one in the league.

I'm not sure what Karius has done to deserve a chance (other than perhaps Klopp giving him his word when he signed or something) because he's been awful pretty much every time he's put on the shirt.

This idea of keeping Ward as third choice as well seems bizarre and unfair.

Is karius that good, in that he needs game time. We barely have one good keeper and we are rotating him.

I thought Karius must be Arsenal's payroll yesterday. Or maybe the football gods demand that we concede and he was simply trying to placate them. Either would make more sense than his actual full time job is top level goalkeeper.

He makes exceptions for if we actually have to win games.

I'm putting a bounty on Karius. If any doormen in town see him out, invent an altercation, and unfortunately break his fucking fingers, I'll nosh him off with a finger up his batty

This whole situation is baffling on every level.

Resting your goalkeeper in August. Constant reassurances that he's still "number one". The regular proof that Klopp doesn't actually rate him that highly, but the hapless Karius doing little but make his own eventual ascension to number one look ever more unlikely.

There's always chatter that Klopp thinks Mignolet doesn't move the ball out quickly or accurately enough - with hand or foot - and that Karius is seen as more in line with how Klopp wants his keeper to play, but against Arsenal Karius dithered and almost got into trouble twice, so it's hard to see where that comes from.

Hahahaha

One possible justification for this highly unusual decision is that Mignolet needs to be kept on his toes – in his LFC career he always raised his game when his place was under threat. Maybe Klopp or his coaching team noticed some small sign of creeping complacency in otherwise solid performances (or even in training) and decided to not-so-subtly remind Simon that he's not guaranteed the #1 spot.

Mignolet for league games, Karius for CL and Ward for domestic cup games? 😱

I kinda like this idea just for the fact that it's pretty shitty that Ward was an integral part of Huddersfield promotion and now he's relegated to third choice. Karius was hardly tested in the Arse match, but I'm putting down the rustiness due to jitters, which can only be helped by playing the player in games. Mignolet's good, but it's hardly a huge gap between the keepers.

It seems unfair that Ward isn't being given the same chance that karius is, seeing as Ward proved he could do it with Huddersfield in a demanding Championship season. It's arguably more of a test doing that than playing in Germany is.
