Inspired by an article I posted in the "Signings of the Season so far" thread I think it is interesting to behold the Top 5 Key Passers in the EPL over the past two Seasons. Quite amazing we have got two players in that list to be honest.
Especially last Seasons stats are rather impressive and interesting reading:
Suarez is not only a key goal scorer but he is also a key passer, which obviously will not come as good news to some quarters of this site - Suarez is also a very important player when it comes to setting up his teammates, despite all his shortcomings. A beast of a player.
Secondly how good is Baines??
I know there were a fierce debate on here a while back whether he's already better than Cole and that is just a tremendous stat to show for the Baines lovers. Among the best in the league when it comes to key passes and such a shame he ended up in the wrong Liverpool club.
Also very nice to see Gerrard in there, and it really does show that although we've all seen some cracks in his game over the past years he is certainly still a top top player that has every tight to be picked week in week out. Form is temporary remember and this kind of highlights his impact still.
And finally, what on EARTH is Mourinho thinking dropping Mata out of his team?? Has he finally lost it?

That’s why key passes are interesting to track, and high levels of KP usually translate to high levels of goals/assists.
Before I get too far ahead of myself, we probably need a definition. What is a key pass? Opta defines it as:
The final pass or pass-cum-shot leading to the recipient of the ball having an attempt at goal without scoring.
Key passes are correlated to assists, which are goals resulting from a pass, and are a fairly strong measure of whether a player is a good offensive passer.
The top 5 in EPL for key passes last year were David Silva, Baines, Suarez, Mata, and Steven Gerrard. The year before was Mata, Silva, Modric, Nasri, RVP, and Valencia (13 assists for United that season in 22 starts!). It’s an imperfect, but damned useful stat.

PS @Binny have you got access to this Seasons stats with regards to key passes in our team? I reckon Coutinho must look good here also.
PSS Pass-cum-shot? Really?
