Kenny Dalglish 'to use Liverpool funds for single big star, not squad depth'

This kind of chimes with what Commolli was reported to have said earlierin the week on not buying where we have a top talent in the Academy coming through. Thoughts?

Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish is set to be given a 'significant' transfer budget to use this summer - but rather than add depth to his squad, he is set to rely on younger players from the academy and use the money for one big star.

Liverpool have already been linked with a series of top names in world football amid expectations that new owners Fenway Sports Group will invest heavily at the end of the season.
Several Reds fans are calling on Dalglish to improve the squad by adding strength in depth.
However, the recent performances of some of the younger stars already at the club are said to be encouraging the Scot to go in a different direction.
A large kitty to spend on just one or two names would give Dalglish free rein to go after any of Europe's top stars, in the same way he splashed out almost £60million on Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll in January.
And defender Martin Skrtel believes such an approach is the right move - even though it is considered a risk to the club's aspirations of breaking back into the top four.
'The young guys from the academy have already got a chance in the first team, like Martin Kelly, Jay Spearing, John Flanagan and Peter Gulacsi.
'They're still young but they are part of the first team.
'We can see they are the future of Liverpool FC and it is the right way. These players will be a big part in the future of Liverpool.'
Skrtel reserved special praise for 18-year-old right-back Flanagan, whose mature performance on his first senior start helped the Reds to beat fourth-placed Manchester City 3-0 earlier this week.
'He was brilliant. Even though he is just 18, on the pitch he looked like an experienced player,' the Slovakian international added.
'He showed his best and he can be a very good player.'

Aaaaand this approach means that your place is safe(r), doesn't it, Skittles ?

I foresee much fantasising...

Hmm, not sure about this. It was basically the thinking behind the infamous Aquilani/Magic summer, which is when our squad depth really started to become a serious problem. It still is IMO, as most of our good youngsters are still in the 16/17 age bracket and therefore too young to be playing more than a couple of PL games per season.

All depends on positions though. Eg if we truly believe that Flanagan is good enough to be a back-up RB, then it would make sense to sell Magic and use that money elsewhere on the pitch, because Kelly is clearly good enough to play RB for us on a regular basis, and our left flank needs at least two very good players.

I'm excited at the thought of Raheem and Sterling getting to mix it with the rest in preseason.

What a daft thing to say Jimmy. 95% of players rely heavily on one foot, including some of the greatest players in the history of the game.

Right then "if" this is to be the case, who wouldbe your 2 big signings?

I'd go for Hazard and M'Vila

Gerrard is one of the most one footed players I have seen, he will even hit the ball with the outside of his right foot to save using his left.

Carra is no better, Riise only used his right to stand on.

Fuck it, i've just looked at how good our side could be with a couple of top draw players added and i want us to adopt this approach.

Am I the one being whooshed here, or is this some kind of an impromptu multi-whoosh.

Like a flash-whoosh if you will?

I know what you are getting at Bunny. Two main differences now to then, (I hope) firstly as you have pointed out the yoof seems to have some real prospects, and secondly I don't believe we will have to buy to sell. John Henry has already come out and said he was aghast at the depth of the squad.

Arjen Robbin, who is the type of player Raheem reminds me most of, is extraordinarily one-footed. Actually, Raheem is never as one-footed as that, though Suso probably is.

I take your point about Gerrard, but, he curled one in against Trinidad and Tobago, in WC'06, with his left.

Oh for shame !

I have high hopes for Conor Coady. England captain at U17, U18 and U19.
He's already 18 years old, with Spearing ahead of him I don't see how the bigger and stronger Coady won't be able to challenge him for a place in the team.

At other times, though, Rafa took some stick for buying quantity rather than quality. The club does have to have some sort of overall transfer strategy, but ultimately that's less important than targeting the right individuals, whether they're stars or not. Get that bit sorted and the strategy will sort itself.

I don't agree about selling Magic BTW. Kelly may not be earmarked for RB in the long run, besides which Magic's excellent form at LB has pushed that position a fair way down the priority list IMO.

I just can't see Kenny splashing out on a big player. I would make a statement of intent but wouldn't make sense from a team perspective.

We need 3 or 4 players that are capable of going straight into the first team. LB, CM, and wingers at the very least.

I don't get peoples eagerness to get rid of Magic. He is fantastic at LB and can cover at RB if Kenny wants him there permanently. Kelly should be groomed CB as he looks a natural successor to Carra. Warnock is not the LB that we need, we should have greater ambition that a Villa squad player.

It's absolutely the correct approach. Squad depth should be achieved by pushing current members of the first team down the pecking order rather than buying backup for those first team players. Kenny is the fucking MAN, Also our kids are the best I've seen in decade and kenny trusts them to pull up the slack.

All signings we make must be players who go straight in to the first team and they wont come cheap. Key positions that must be addressed are centre back, left back, wide midfield, and (dare I say it) a long-term replacement for Gerrard.

Spearing has done ok but I'd love to see us take Rodwell off the bitters. You could build a team round him.

I'd like us to get a proven centre back in and then blood Kelly in there with him and Carra, and Flanagan to get more game time. Fullback is the position that is never going to be the difference between whether you win or lose a match, and so its perfect for ensuring those 2 get game time.

I'd be inclined to flog Glen Johnson if we can get decent money tbh.

Left back, hopefully we'll sign that Enrique who looks a decent player.

Wide midfield, we'll have to push the boat out although apparently Hazard is off to Arsenal. Reckon city will sign that Sanchez, so not sure who that leaves us with. Better not be Downing though. I'd probably plum for Mata.

I don't get this magic for LB stuff. Sure, he can fill in there, but because he's right footed he's constantly having to come inside.

For me he plays at RB, Kelly will get enough games there and a top LB is one of our priorities.

The income from selling acquilani should fund a new LB, leaving a generous amount for our new golden god of an attacking wide player.
