Liverpool Football Club can confirm Naby Keita was taken to hospital in Naples on Wednesday evening during the first half of the Champions League fixture with SSC Napoli.

The midfielder started the game at the Stadio San Paolo, but was substituted inside the opening 20 minutes and replaced by Jordan Henderson after alerting the team’s medical staff to back pain.

Keita was transferred to a local hospital with the club doctor, where - with the midfielder’s agreement - he underwent a number of precautionary health checks to assess his condition.

No decision has yet been taken on when the 23-year-old will be discharged.

Liverpool are scheduled to remain in Italy until Thursday morning before flying back to England.

I was wondering if he just wasn't up for it... He looked totally out of sorts on that pitch yesterday.

Is he as good as we hope, has he lost confidence?

I'm scared he is homesick etc....

This is all a bit odd. Rare you don't get at least an idea of what is wrong.

Yeah it's all very odd. It's not typical to stay overnight for a back injury.

You get an MRI, pain relief and go on your way. Or you get surgery in a very limited category of cases.

My brother in-law faked a bad back to try and get a few days off from the army when he was doing his national service. They kept him in hospital over the weekend to keep an eye on him. He was bored as fuck, even more so than what he had been.

I know he's not contributed much yet, but this is a worry when you look at how flat the midfield is without someone spearheading it. Shaqiri could be the answer, and if we had AOC fit. There's no way we'll get far relying on Gini, Hendo and Milner, without someone to compliment the donkey work they do. Without that someone, all you've really got is donkey work and Milner's usual endeavour,

It would be nice if Keita was faking it.

His fall was reminescent of one I had in a coffee shop about 6 weeks ago. I hope his back is not like mine.

He didnt seem to show any pain on the pitch, that's the weird thing about all of this.
You said that last night during the match & I didn't get it then either, cos I thought he looked in, if not severe pain, at least definite discomfort. He was half grimacing whilst he was clutching his back.

I thought he looked more deflated and uncomfortable than anything, maybe I'm looking for too much as my own experience with back pain was absolute excruciating agony.

The way he started the game, it's quite lucky he had to go off. He was fucking awful.
Yeh it's concerning the way he's started, it really looks like it's in his head though, he's playing within himself and scared, almost like a shy kid who doesn't think he fits in. We need to get Rodgers shrink on him.

I've heard it said by Henderson enthusiasts that England were never behind during the world cup while he was on the pitch.

I am more than happy to use this line for keita and against him if we're talking about last night.

If I think back to when I suffered from back pain, nothing comes immediately to mind, probably because I haven't turned 50 yet.

It looked instantly like back pain to me when he sat down and then laid flat. I'd guess he had a trapped nerve or something somewhere, given how immobile he made himself. The good news is that his scared reaction to it suggests it's not a common occurence for him. I've got nerve damage, you get used to it.

I hope he plays Sunday, his first impulse is to move/carry the ball forwards - the antithesis of Henderson right now.
