The young Barcelona Midfielder Thiago.
Sergio Canales
Christian Eriksen

Theres a few massively talented youngsters out there.
In three years time they will be 30-40m a piece.

You could argue though that Thiago is already playing at a rather big-ish club.

;D

kun was going for 17m and wanted to come here but rafa thought it was too big a risk. FOOL!!

Neil - Kun was rated around 12 million at the time he made comments about watching the CL final in Istanbul. I don't think we ever seriously entertaining purchasing him, but spending that amount on youngters wan't new to Rafa (Babel!!!!)

and babel flopped. so spending big on youngsters is a massive gamble but it is a gamble we are going to have to take as we can't compete with the muscle of city or chelsea.

Higuain - 8.5m
Aguero - 16m
Pato - 16m
Robinho - 15m
Sanchez - 1.2m
Hernandez - 6m
Diego - 4m

We simply arent and have never been good at taking risks on potentially huge talent in particular from South America. In fact the players we sign from there are usually safe bets Paletta, Lucas etc not flair risks.

Still. At least we got Jordan Henderson for a snip.

Any new player, be it young or old, is a risk. Some turn out great, some turn out poor.

Oncey - stop with the Hendo hate. Ryan bigged him up ... He'll be a star (hopefully).
I dont hate Henderson. I think we have massively overpaid (as we did with Carroll and Downing too) and we could have spent that 70m a lot better than we did.
But whats done is done, what will be frustrating is if certain players go to other clubs and rip shit up.
Hopefully some of ours will turn out to be long term bargains.

I would imagine BTW that Arsenal are waiting to see if they have champions league money this year before signing their players for the coming season. Id expect them to bring 4 or 5 in by the transfer window if they beat Udinese on Wednesday.

It's the going rate for young English talent ... Did we overpay? Yah, but better to get these targets than to refuse to pay and get someone worse (which is what happened frequently with Rafa unfortunately).

I don't know re: Henderson yet. The tools are there. Will give him a season before I decide one way or another as he's still a kid, playing for a huge club and a totally different 'way' than Sunderland.

Wrt Arsenal - you're right. If they beat Udinese, they'll bring in some players (though there are rumors that there isn't as much money available as Arsene wants ... or needs?)

Lastly, Top 4 is a must this season (Though I still believe we win the league). We get top 4, we'll sign even bigger talent next year.
I think its an absolute certainty that Arsenal dont have as much money as they/the press would have you believe. All that real estate at Highbury that they cant shift will be a millstone around thier necks. The figures of them having hundreds of millions to spend are bollocks, they had to sell Fabregas and will probably sell Nasri too and maybe MAYBE break even in this window. I cant see them investing 50m or anything like that as i doubt they have it.

"I want to come to England to win trophies - and that's why I accepted Chelsea's offer,'' he said. "It was also a question of sporting achievement, not money. Arsenal and Tottenham were both interested in me but they did not compare with the Blues. I want the Premier League title and this is possible at Chelsea."

We're not mentioned so it could be possible we didnt bid for him. Otherwise, it could be that we sounded him out early and he rejected us.

outside of hazard are there any truly exciting prospects not at a big club?

Neymar, Ganso, Little Lucas.

At a stretch, probably Cavani and Barkley 😉.

Goetze..

The 23-year-old, a World Cup winner with Spain last year, is looking forward to linking up with countryman Fernando Torres in Andre Villas-Boas' side.

He added: 'Fernando helped influence my decision but speaking directly with Villas-Boas was the decisive factor.

'He explained how his style will be based on 4-3-3 and how important I will be to his plans.

'Frank Lampard is a monster of a footballer to play alongside and the prospect of that is also incredible.'

i like the way he pinpoints frank a a monster, not the forward line he's meant to be supplying
