Phil Thompson claims that Liverpool have agreed a deal to sign Newcastle defender Jose Enrique.
The left-back has been on the Anfield radar in recent months with the Magpies expected to command a fee exceeding the £6.3million they paid Villarreal to secure his services in 2007.
Enrique is also a target for AC Milan but former Kop captain Thompson, speaking during an appearance on Norwegian television, understands that talks to make the 25-year-old a Reds player have been finalised.
"From what I've heard, yes the deal has been done and he will come to Liverpool," he told TV2.
"It'll be interesting because he's done very well. He had a difficult first season coming into the Premiership a couple of years ago but he really understands the game now.
"He's one of those full backs who is good going forward but he's also a good defender and I think that is the main thing."
Enrique has held off talks over extending his current contract at St James Park, which expires in 16 months' time, until the end of the season.
