AC Milan have won the race to sign Newcastle United left-back Jose Enrique.

People Sport can reveal Enrique’s agents have entered into talks with the Italian outfit.

And not only is this bad news for Newcastle but also Liverpool who were ready to slap in a £6million offer for the 25-year-old Spanish defender in the summer.

You know that this is rubbish because Milan have signed Urby Emmanuelson from Ajax for LB.
[/quote]

he's not really a 'left back' as he cannot defend - more a left wing lwb.

And not only is this bad news for Newcastle but also Liverpool who were ready to slap in a £6million offer for the 25-year-old Spanish defender in the summer.

Enrique is aware of Liverpool’s interest but fancies a move to Italy.

People Sport revealed on February 6 the Italian clubs were out in force in the stands watching Enrique when Newcastle were beaten 1-0 by Fulham at Craven Cottage.

Sir Alex Ferguson took a look at him at Wigan on January 2
but the Manchester United boss is unlikely to take any further action now that Patrice Evra has committed his long-term future to Old Trafford.

Enrique was a Sam Allardyce signing for Newcastle for £6.3m in the summer of 2007 from Villarreal and the Geordies will be looking for £10m-plus for the left-back, who has shown his class in the Premier League this season after struggling two years ago.

His contract expires in the summer of 2012 and he has indicated that he is ambitious and wants to play Champions League football.

Yeah and they signed Dídac Vilà from Espanyol for left back in the same month.

Is there any player you wouldn't take?

Everyone we're ever linked with, you're sat happily dreaming up how good he'll be.

Keni you're talking out of your ass. I'd take any player whose better than what we have that goes straight into the first team. We lack wingers which is obvious and should be a priority (especially after the WHU game).

Taiwo on a free makes perfect sense freeing up more funds for better quality attacking players.

Liverpool are trying to hijack Jose Enrique’s summer switch to AC Milan.

The Italian outfit have been confident that the 25-year-old Newcastle left-back’s desire to play Champions League football will see him head to Serie A.

But Liverpool have made the Spanish defender aware of their interest and he is torn between the two.

MANCHESTER UNITED are set to fight Liverpool all the way for Newcastle left-back Jose Enrique.

The feeling on Merseyside wasthat boss Kenny Dalglish had the Spaniard’s signing in the bag – but People Sport believes Sir Alex Ferguson is also in the running.

Bayern Munich have already told £15million-rated Enrique, 25, they can offer him Champions League football next season.

AC Milan are also big admirers
of the player Newcastle signed from Villarreal for £6.3m in 2007.

We revealed back in January that Ferguson watched Enrique play in Newcastle’s win at Wigan, despite United left-back Patrice Evra, 30, agreeing a new deal at Old Trafford.

Toon boss Alan Pardew insists that Enrique – who has one more year on his deal – will stay at St James’ Park.

But People Sport revealed last month, he has lined-up Toulouse’s France Under-21 international Cheikh M’Bengue, 22, as a replacement.

Ha, so People Sport have gone from exclusively revealing AC Milan had 'won the race' to sign him to AC Milan being admirers of his.
Typical tabloid bullshit.

Hope the Mancs sign him and Young.
I think we have higher priorities than left back, and we can probably do better than Young for LW.

my worry is that if we don't sign young then we'll get downing, so despite reservations i'm still hoping it happens.

If we don't get Young, we won't get Downing. He just signed a new contract. Its all quiet about N'zogbia but I'm hoping that we get Juan Mata.

That would be a great talent to have in the team.

Appaz Downing has stalled on signing his new contract until he sees whether we're going to bid.

I like Downing too-his delivery into the box is a dozen times better than Young's. If we signed him, I'd still expect a magical signing to add to that. He'd be a very good squad addition, but when you're linked with the Agueros, Matas, and Neymars of the world, Downing is going to understandably draw sighs.

sorry to be a killjoy, but is it just me who gets annoying choppiness when scrolling the page when people have animated avatars like doc mac's? i never seem to get it on other forums, so could it be a site issue?

Thats very true Doc, and therefor I can understand Jons view aswell. But in all this big name, marquee signing transfer discussion. Its important to think of the team and the balance. Getting the right players in to get the best out of the team and tactics. Utd is the perferct example. Of course we need to add quality, but what their name is is irrelevant. The right mix of attacking, defensive, pacey, creative and tough tackling players will be more important. Downing offers pace, skill, hard work, one of the better left pegs in the league and knows the Prem. If Kenny believes we can challenge for the title with him in the squad - then thats fine by me.

There is an element of me that thinks 'fuck it, if he can get this much out of Maxi, Raul, Lucas, et al, then it doesn't matter' but I'd prefer us to get real quality, that can win matches, wherever possible, as teamwork is fantastic, but at times you need an edge, like that which Suarez brings, to get you over the line.

I absolutely agree Foxy, but if we have one of the best headers of the ball in world footy, you can understand why buying one of the league's best crossers would provide both that 'edge' but give us another dynamic. I still want a gamechanger who can perform magic with his toes, but Downing makes a lot of sense for us.

Good point, well made.

I also note that a lot of people whose opinions on footy players I respect think Downing is a better buy & fit for us than Young, so I'm willing to concede I may be wrong.

ok, that's it, thanks.

as for downing...about the best i can say about him is that i felt pretty much exactly the same when we were linked to james milner before he moved to villa, and he turned out pretty well. i'd still be pretty deflated if we sign him, though. he's not exactly a spring chicken, either - i guess i just think wtf are we employing comolli for if we end up going for such an established player with so little potential/value still to be unlocked.

still, it's only my hunch we'll go for him if young doesn't come, nothing guaranteed at all.

JOSE ENRIQUE is pondering a dramatic U-turn over his Newcastle United future.

The Spanish left-back had all but decided to depart St James’ Park after the January transfer window sale of Andy Carroll, with Liverpool, Milan and Bayern Munich all circling round the 23-year-old.

Indeed United have been making plans for his exit in recent months with a bid lodged for Cheikh M’Bengue – the France under-21 international that was on Newcastle’s radar back in March.

But with Milan out of the running after ear-marking Nigeria defender Taye Taiwo as their new left-back and United set to offer him a bumper new five-year contract with a substantial pay rise, Enrique’s future may still reside on Tyneside.

Kenny Dalglish is still desperate to add Enrique to his Spanish legion at Anfield but boss Alan Pardew said that the player had “absolutely not†indicated that he wanted a move. And he said that the club are still “optimistic†of retaining one of their most consistent stars, with United desperate to open talks on the £7million-rated star next week.

Pardew said: “He’s not indicated to myself or to Derek what his intentions are.

“We’re still optimistic - of course. I’d love to keep him. Absolutely love to keep him.

“But I think we have to be on our guard because there are so many noises about him. I think that’s the natureof the business we’re in.â€
