Unless another party is sanctioning the minor purchases.
It is a major seas change in policy, and I can't see it is of Rafa's doing. Three young British talents in as many weeks?
It's not like £5m is a great sum in the major scheme of things, it's just not like us since Rafa's tenure.
I wonder if Dalglish has been given a bit more authority in the Football side of things, and Purslow is involved, hence Rafa's alleged falling out.

Managing Director Christian Purslow told Liverpool's official wesbite: "The success of our Academy is vital to the future progress of the club and we have made clear that we will invest in outstanding young talent.

"Raheem is a very exciting young English player whose progress was being closely monitored by many other leading clubs and I'm delighted he's joining us.

"Frank McParland and his staff have done a great job in bringing him to Liverpool."

Do you think Frank McParland was ahead of Rafa in the request to buy these kids Ross?

We are running a multibillion business here. It is not like Hicks and Gillett are monitoring every dime we spend. I assume we have budgets to operate within and people with competence to make decisions on day to day basis!

Given Purslow's comments it looks that way in this case.

To answer Rafa4PM's perfectly valid question, I would imagine the 'business as usual' mantra is important for H&G because it gives the club a more stable, less crisis-ridden facade: important for potential buyers. Presumably a fund was set up specifically to sign young English talent, and these transfers are being paid out of that.

I don't think it necessarily means we'll have money to spend in the summer though. This could just as easily signal a new Arsenal-esque policy on transfers. Sterling, Shelvey and Wilson might well end up as our headline transfer signings for the summer of 2010...

How could you "assume" it was our Sunny ?

Funnily enough, I took a gander over there this morning and saw that thread.

It took me about 0.0031 seconds to work out it couldn't be the big man.
