Glen Johnson has indicated he is approaching the end of his Liverpool career having admitted that talks on a contract extension at Anfield have fallen “very quiet”.
The 30-year-old will become a free agent next summer and is able to sign a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club from 1 January, having so far resisted the offer of a 12-month extension to his £120,000-a-week deal from Liverpool’s owners, Fenway Sports Group.
Liverpool’s offer arrived earlier this year but remains unsigned, with Johnson seeking a longer-term contract. The Anfield club secured fellow England international Daniel Sturridge on a new five-year deal last week and have opened negotiations with Raheem Sterling’s representatives over an enhanced and extended contract for the talented 19-year-old.
Asked for an update on his contract situation, Johnson replied it was: “very quiet”. He added: “I am just concentrating week by week and not thinking about it. Of course I want to stay but, like I say, I worry about this week, this week, and then next week, next week. That is how I live my life.”
Johnson returned from a six-week injury lay-off in Liverpool’s 2-1 win over West Bromwich Albion on Saturday and admitted he was disappointed not to have recovered ahead of England’s squad announcement for the Euro 2016 qualifiers against San Marino and Estonia.
“I would have preferred the international break to have come next week so I could declare myself fit and available,” he said. “Obviously with the squad being picked last Thursday I haven’t played for six weeks so I can’t be involved. I want to go away with the England team and play again for them as well.”

Sounds like he's done here. I rate him but he's not worth that a week especially when he's injury prone and has the attention span of a record label

Anyone actually wanna keep him?

I think it's time, especially with Manquillo on the horizon. I think it's good he's back though, Manquillo has played practically every minute and he needs a breather, Johnson can fill in and play in other games.

1 year on 120k or 3 years on 90 at QPR or somewhere in Europe ..

I suspect the 12 month extension has a significantly reduced wage - maybe 80k or something like that? He's been poor over the last year to 18 months and often he's looked like he can't be arsed. He's got ability though, and he probably knows he's playing for his future so if he's bothered he'll knuckle down and take his chance when he undoubtedly gets it, and remind me (yes, me specifically) that he can be a right back good enough for our team.

It'd odd. Johnson had infuriated me over the last 12 months but it was good to see him come back into the fold against West Brom. Absence makes the heart grow fonder I suppose and for a while I had forgotten the 'pain' Johnson put us through with his languid displays. He has suffered from a lack of competition for years. The arrival of Manquillo and a potential fight for a new contract (albeit here or abroad) should ensure he is at least putting in a decent shift for us.

He looked pretty decent when he came on. That said, for 120k we should be getting some better performances.
We need better.

Perhaps he actually genuinely wants to play for another couple of years & it's the length not the wages in the contract he's bothered by?

I dunno, but unless he has an offer from a Spanish team or somewhere else easier & warmer (maybe the US?) it doesn't make sense.

It's hard to put yourself in his position, but I can imagine if you're struggling at times with your natural game as age catches up a temptation like playing in the US for a couple of years at a lower standard with all the benefits that go along with it would be hard to resist.

Oh, & fwiw I probably argued for him more than anyone else last season, but he finally pushed me over the edge, there's only so long you can think it's form & not his age working against him.

That's not to say the revisionism some spout is right, there's been times in our not so distant past that only he & Gerrard were our world class players & he didn't fuck off to Chelsea, Real, Arsenal or any of the other clubs that have been heavily linked with him, despite us struggling during much of his tenure.

If he could play the occasional game & stay I'd be happy, but I don't think that will suit him, I think he wants more game time & a longer contract, which we won't give him.

Times up. Will be wearing the hoops of 'Arry in January, as long as 'Appy 'Arry hasn't been sacked by then.

Time to be moved on.. When a player is able to be replaced by someone better than them then it is time to get rid and that is now the case.

I know it's a minor point, but when was that? We had either Torres or Suarez since he signed. Or am I missing something?
Torres wasn't near world class for at least a season & a half whilst he was here, the only world class players we had starting then we're Johnson & Gerrard... Fuck, under Hodgson they stuck out like sore thumbs, looked as if they'd be loaned to a championship club a lot of the time they were so much better than their teammates.

Oddly, I think Johnson has done quite well under Hodgson, both for us and England. Maybe if he's given too much licence to attack he just completely forgets about being a defender.

Fair enough. I'm not sure I agree that Johnson was ever "more" world class than Torres, but it doesn't really matter anyway. He isn't world class now.

I remember Johnson "looking" World Class briefly for a couple of months of his first season, he's had fleeting moments of genius and frequent moments of indecision and poor concentration, since.

Torres was the highest scoring import at the time and was outstanding in his partnership with Gerrard. He went off the rails at the end, through a combination of injury and a shit attitude, but when he was onfire he was destroying just about anyone who stood in his way.

Soz, I just don't see the comparison in who was better or who resembled anything like a World Class footballer, it's Torres hands down. Johnson could have been World Class, but it just didn't happen.

Never world class but he played well on Saturday and I would keep him - unfashionable I know. He rightfully got horrendous flack for cack performances but at least he put the club first as he did play a lot last season whilst injured

Couldn't believe what you were saying so just checked. Torres scored 33 goals / 46 apps in his first season for us. He was the first striker since Fowler (11 years previous) to get past 20 league goals in a season. And that was also in his first season.

Still have a soft spot for the guy despite his prolonged shitness. I like the way it is now, good squad option but not for loads of money

We have Manquillo (assuming we can make the loan permanent) and Flanno. IMO this now makes Johnson 3rd pick at RB. At LB we have Moreno & Enrique. There are pros and cons to both Enrique and Johnson at LB but we don't need both. If we go with 4 FBs then Moreno, Manquillo, Flanno & Johnson gives us 3 choices at both RB & LB. Though I much prefer Enrique over Johnson we lose that versatility. And of course Emre can play LB too.

What are the actual stipulations of the loan? Say we want to keep him after this season, what has to happen?

Ideally we'd keep him a year on less wages, I agree Flannel and Manpillow should be our first two right backs for the next few years, but Johnson's experience will help the squad. At the moment he, Skrtel and Gerrard are our only long serving experienced players, and we need that to help guide our young squad.
