Fuck Essien.
aww hell yeah!

good signing as long as he's not our most expensive and we bag a silva or equivalent then that's an excellent set of players coming in.

only problem is who are we gonna lose.

Surely Arbeloa will definitely leave now. With his fee and the money owed for Crouch, thats Johnson paid more or less.

Now lets get an attacking midfielder and striker.
Indeed, I figure he is a £2.5M upgrade from Arbeloa (if Arby goes);

£10.5 Million (17.5M minus the £7M owed from the Crouch deal,
£8 Million from sale of Arbeloa (what every paper is quoting for the madrid deal)

It leaves almost rafa's full kitty to play with.

Degen is going to pleasantly surprise you all 😉

* nods smugly and possibly foolishly*
Yeah, he's gonna fuck off somewhere far, far away from Liverpool and stay there.
Thought hed done it allready.. Havent seen him since they made that pic of the newsignings!

gerrard is thr best central midfielder, the best right midfielder we have and the best forward (forward rather than striker) but I don't think he is the best right back at the club.

Is anyone else not getting excited about this transfer window? Since when did we ever spank 18M on a defender? It's not the Liverpool way.............

Some shit us going down seriously it has to be. How can we go from money problems to a transfer of this magnitude? I read somewhere that Johnson will be the 3rd most expensive RB of all time. Crazy!

I can't wait to see what happens in the next few weeks.

Great news.

Lets hope he continues to mature and grow as a player here.

A definate step in the right direction by Rafa.

I'd rather we spent big money on every signing these days than buying 4 or 5 squad fillers that do not cut it.

Good signing.

But only if we can get a class left winger and move Babel up top to back-up Nando.

Or sell Babel and get a class left winger and dependable back-up to Nando.

Either way, we still need a class left winger.

Oh and I do hope we hold on to everyone else ('cept Dossena and Voronin). United won the title because of their superior squad. There's no point in bringing Johnson only to sell Arby and be left with only one competent right back. The option of having a defensive right back, Arbeloa (for European games) and an attacking right back in Johnson (for teams who come to park the bus) could be invaluable to us competing on all fronts.

Babel will not be playing upfront.

He loses possession wayyy too much for Rafa to ever let him play as a striker unless desperate.

Of course you're right, but i'd kind of hope Rafa would iron some of these issues out. I think his only chance of a future with us is up top and if coached correctly i don't see why he couldn't be as useful as a Darren Bent or Hasselbaink-type player.

gerrard would probably be our best centre back as well if you gave him the chance.

well you'd hope the man we've just spent 18m on would be better than someone who hasn't played there (RB) for any sustained period for nearly nine years.

if gerrard had to play rb tomorrow i am sure he would be better than johnson, that is no disespect to johnson, but a credit to gerrard the most complete player in the world - I think only reina and torres could do a better job in their positions in our squad than gerrard.

Not that i'm too fussed but why does everyone mention the 7 million crouch money like its some kind of free dough to offset against Johnson's fee? If you break it down we would have sold them Crouchy for 3 million and bought Johnson for 10 million.

Because it's money that doesn't have to come out of our budget for this offseason and therefore shouldn't hinder our ability to add another top player?

That's true*

*If our budget is as simple a matter as someone buying groceries living paycheck to paycheck.

That is assuming G&G wrote us a blank check? A budget is derived from income and expense. Since our income suffered, our budget suffers. I am happy with the purchase, but to me, it doesn't make it any cheaper that some of the fees were offset by what ports owe us.

got our future defence sorted then

johnson skrtel agger insua 😉

all 24 or younger

10.5 mil for Johnson, a little expensive but if reports to be believed, we'll get at least 10mil for Arbeloa. So lets now focus on attacking players. Silva and Eto'o next.

So essentially, we've just swapped players?

When it's all done, then yes. Most people would say (myself included) that Johnson is a better player though.

it's 17.5. just because pompy owed us money doesn't mean that i.o.u. disappeared into thin air

Terrible bit of business being done on the Johnson deal. With the 7million owed to us by Pompey we should be paying no more than £3million. And that's including the inflation for an English player. Agreeing to an £17.5million deal is worse than the Keane deal last season. Darijo Srna is better in defense and attack and would cost around £10million. This crap of signing English players for the sake of signing English players is getting ridiculous, the nonsense with the Barry deal last summer and now this. £18million each time for average players who are not better than what we already have.

Selling Arbeloa is a good move because he's clearly going to be replaced this summer(although he's better than Johnson) and he won't sit on the bench in a World Cup year where he's certain to make the Spanish squad if he's starting regularly for whatever club he's at.
Its not signing English for the sake of it though is it. Its to prepare for impending fifa rule changes. If the 6 plus 5 came in this year we would be FUCKED. Luckily we have 2 more years to get some homegrown players in. Im personally happy that we are targeting the 11 best players in the country (barry and Johnson) rather than scouring around signing Downings and Bentleys for now.

Johnson is currently at best an incremental improvement on Arbeloa, but is two years younger and has more potential upside. He's a better fit for the league as well, a better athlete.

If we get 10 million for Arbeloa, not only will it, along with Johnson set a new inflationary standard from this point on for the new cost of a decent fullback, it'll still mean we have to see the improvement on the pitch to justify the fee.

There is absolutely no doubt we are overpaying though.

Oh, and whether there was a rule or not, I've no problem with us trying to have some English core, and paying more for it, I've just never been wowed by Johnson, but am looking forward to seeing him with an open mind.
