But he has done a fantastic Job at Jamaica.. He has been looking at a way to get back into club management, maybe this could be it for him..

I come from Jamaica my name is John Barne-s, and when i do my thing the crowd go banana-s.

no they did not qualify... but neither did they for the previous two either..

they are yet to lose a game under Barnes and he won them the Caribbean Cup

JOHN BARNES TO BOSS TRANMERE

By CHRIS BASCOMBE, 06/06/2009

FORMER LIVERPOOL and England winger John Barnes is set to be named Tranmere Rovers boss this week.

Barnes, now managing Jamaica, has been approached by Prenton Park chairman Peter Johnson to replace sacked Ronnie Moore.

And he'll be joined as an assistant on Merseyside by ex-Kop team-mate Jason McAteer.

Barnes, 45, had a stint as Celtic boss in 1999.

I dont think he's got what it takes. He's not nasty enough for me, I think any manager needs to be ruthless, & I just dont think he has it in him.

I hope I'm wrong. The appointment of Trigger is his first mistake.

You're right, he's as far from nasty as you can get. I really, really hope he succeeds though. He needs a ruthless assistant manager that can strike fear into the players, while he plays the good cop.

You both maybe right; I think if Barnes is going to be a success he is probably going to be in the Wenger mould, by that I mean not he does not hvae your typical 'angry, mad' manager persona; that doesn't mean he has no passion though). I really hope he makes it; if he is a success I can see Barnes' team playing some silky beautiful football.

I think this is a wise choice by Peter Johnson... Ince would have been the other option, but his wages would of been too much for Tranmere..

He is complaining about the decline of crowds... hopefully installing a big name in football like John Barnes will bring the punters back in and as far as I am aware he is going to be handed a substantial transfer kitty.

I think he will do ok... He has been doing pretty ok for Jamacia, and he is dealing with championship/ league 1 quality players...

He even managed a decent result against Mexico

Well, Aldo had a fantastic season at Trannie, and I don't see why Digger can't at least emulate that. It'll be interesting. All the same, Jason as number two?? That really bothers me. Lovely bloke - his charitable efforts have largely gone under the radar, but he's been great - but I can't see him helping John much at all.

I wonder, macca. Jason Mc surfaces now and again on SSN and I've heard him give some surprisingly fluent, articulate interviews. He's also tough enough to have faced Roy Keane down on the pitch. I think this combo could surprise a few people.

Whitmore replaces Barnes as Boyz head coach

Howard Walker

Monday, June 08, 2009

A disappointed John Barnes has been replaced by Theodore Whitmore as head coach after his seven-month contract was not renewed by the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF), it was announced after Jamaica's 3-2 win over Panama at the National Stadium last night.

Barnes, 45, who took over the coaching reins on November 1, 2008, will instead be moving on to English League One outfit Tranmere Rovers.

His contract with Tranmere will start in July and Barnes was visibly upset that his contract with the Jamaica Football Federation wasn't extended to the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Said Barnes: "Yes, I am disappointed that I would not be going to the Gold Cup because I could have started the contract (with Tranmere) after the
Gold Cup."

"But I fully accept and understand the JFF decision that they will appoint Theodore, as of now, to give him a chance to experience football at the highest level.

"I have to thank the JFF for giving me an opportunity in doing something I love. It is something I wanted to get involved with for a long time and they gave me that opportunity," Barnes added.

The JFF president, Captain Horace Burrell, made the announcement after the game last night and wished Barnes all the best.

Said Burrell: "Our contract with Coach Barnes expires at the end of June, which is in another couple of days from now. Naturally, Coach Barnes has to be looking around, and I am very pleased that Barnes has indeed landed a contract at Tranmere Rovers in England.

"As a result of this, the JFF has immediately appointed Theodore Whitmore as head coach of the Reggae Boyz team, and this will go for one year," said Burrell.

Whitmore was not at the press conference and Barnes wished him all the best saying he knew he would do a very good job.

The former Liverpool and England winger will start preseason training with Tranmere Rovers, the current club of Reggae Boy Ian 'Pepe' Goodison and a former club of Whitmore.

Barnes, who took over the coaching reins from interim coach Whitmore in November after Brazilian Rene Simoes was fired, led the team unbeaten to winning the Digicel Caribbean Cup in December.

He finished his first national coaching job with a winning record of five wins and four draws.

Rumours have it this John Barnes appointment has come about as Fowler and McManaman are set to pump a substantial amount of money into the club..

Not a wind up this as true as it can get... its the rumours that our going round amongst a lot of die hard Tranmere Rovers fans.. The John Barnes appointment apparently was leaked from one of their scouts.. and this Fowler/ McManaman link has come from the same source

Apparently he like a ruthless streak in his coaching style...... I can't see it somehow...... He doesn't seem the type..... But he does say don't judge me by the nature of the player I was... I hope it goes well for him and make success of it for both trigger & digger..

I imagine there will be a mass influx of Liverpool reserves playing for Tranmere next season...

Barnes: "I Insist On Hard Work, Discipline & Desire"

John Barnes told the press of his delight at taking up the challenge of becoming new Tranmere Manager.

The former England international is joined at the Club by new Assistant Manager Jason McAteer on a two year contract and says he can't wait to get started.

He told Tranmere World: "This is a wonderful opportunity for myself and Jason. I'm looking forward to the challenge ahead. I know it's not going to be easy but I believe we can do something special here. I would have walked over hot coals to get here.

"Tranmere was always a club I admired. I was really impressed with the work Tranmere did in the community. I know they're a strong family club and the work the players do reminds me of my days at Watford. I always felt it would be a fantastic place to come and work. I am local, and Jason is even more local than me.

"It's an added bonus that it's my local team. My kids go to school across the road and I know the area. But if you don't win football matches it counts for nothing."

Turning his thoughts towards next season, Barnes outlined his thoughts on how he will manage his team.

He added: "I want to get a structure on board in terms of the philosophy of how we want to play. There are no bad players, you have to create an environment which can bring the best out of them. If you organise players and give them clearly defined roles without making it too complicated, you can be consistent. Getting a system down as early as possible that the players understand will help our consistency throughout the season.

"Having played at the highest level and being the sort of player I was, people may have a misconception of the sort of coach I want to be. I insist on hard work, discipline and desire from my team. With Jamaica we played against the Cayman Islands and Mexico and in both games I demanded the same intensity, discipline and desire in both games. If you have that attitude in every game, including pre-season games, you will be consistent.

"I'm looking to instil my philosophy on the players on the first day in pre-season."

Meanwhile, Barnes said he hoped his management style, rather than his name, would give him the edge in the transfer market.

"My name won't give me an advantage on the field, as I'm not playing and neither is Jason. It could be an advantage in terms of speaking to managers like Arsene Wenger and them picking up the phone, but what is more important is that I can convince that sort of person that the sort of football we will play will help their players develop."

There will be more from John Barnes and Jason McAteer throughout the week.
