John Arne Riise Decides To Quit Football

I don't think that defence gets enough credit. Its the best defence we've had since the 80's. And Riise was a significant part of it.

Who wouldn't give that defence credit? Top quality in every position (even if Riise was a little erratic); height, strength, passing ability, and two fullbacks who could attack and defend.

I think people would give it credit if asked to look at their record together.

But i think its pretty easy to overlook them

Is he actually ginger? He dyed his hair so many shades of black/red/brown and strawberry blonde I ended up in doubt!

I loved Riise. Any defender that belts in goals against UTD or Chelsea on more than a few occasions will always get a soft spot.

Shame he got complacent by his own admission, he could easily have been our left back or another 3/4 years.

We still haven't gotten anyone better since.

He was injured a lot but I preferred Aurelio. Sorry.

I've never understood the love for Aurelio myself.

He was rubbish, was injured for the most part, wasn't a very good tackler and apart from a handful of good displays most notably away to Utd in the 4-1 he was average to sh*t.

I'm amazed at the fondness he was remembered with.

Big fan of Riise.

Always was a solid player for us and very much unfairly maligned for his defending.

Go watch his goals comp on YouTube. It's ridiculous.

I think Riise was one of the players that typified us over the last decade.

Could be very good, but was inconsistent. He also had his limitations and while I liked and appreciated him, I always thought we can done with a little more quality there.

Me too. Couldn't head a ball, was slow as fuck, and couldn't tackle his way out of a wet Echo.

Agreed. Teams used to target his wing, and Sami frequently had to bail him out. I always thought he'd have been better as a LM. The fact that those who came after him at LB have been worse doesn't mean he was better than average as a defender.

Tremendous club servant though and I hope things go well for him in the future.
