[article=http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/liverpool/11674898/Liverpool-transfer-news-Brendan-Rodgers-to-bid-for-Charlton-and-England-U19-defender-Joe-Gomez.html]Brendan Rodgers is set to offer £3.5 million for Charlton Athletic teenager Joe Gomez as he prepares to offload Sebastián Coates to Sunderland.

Rodgers, the Liverpool manager, will step up his interest in Gomez with a bid this week and attempt to win the race for one of English football’s emerging young talents.

Arsenal and Aston Villa are also keen on Gomez, 18, who appears certain to leave Charlton this summer with the Championship club looking for a transfer fee of £7m after various add-ons.

Rodgers has been aware of the centre-half’s ability for some time and sees him as a replacement for Coates, who is due to join Sunderland for around £4m.

Gomez has only made 21 league starts but is already highly regarded, winning four caps at England under-19 level, and has also been a long-term target for Arsène Wenger.

Tim Sherwood, the Aston Villa manager, is also a huge admirer after first becoming aware of Gomez during his time in charge of Tottenham Hotspur’s academy. However, any bid is certain to be complicated by the prospect of an imminent takeover with one consortium being granted exclusivity.

Rodgers has already made an inquiry but is expected to table an offer in the next few days.

Coates, the Uruguay international, will end his four-year association with Liverpool by agreeing to join Dick Advocaat at Sunderland.

The 24-year-old spent part of last season on loan at the Stadium of Light and is poised to complete a permanent move.

Liverpool also maintain an interest in Villa striker Christian Benteke and Southampton defender Nathaniel Clyne but are expecting another bid from Manchester City for Raheem Sterling in the next 48 hours.[/article]

It's not written by Chris Bascombe, by the way.

By replacement for Coates, does Rodgers mean to loan him out all season or just play him a couple of times in cup games before discarding him?

I hope Joe is short for Giuseppi or something, otherwise it sounds like his name has been put together by Championship Manager after you've been playing it for 20 seasons and all the original players have retired. I once saw a footballer with the game-generated name 'Sol Mike' on there back in the days of playing 97/98. Joe Gomez is that calibre of name.

The answer (from Wiki):
Full name: Joseph Dave Gomez

If he gets some success, he'll probably insist on being called "Joseph" instead of "Joe".

Reading a bit about this kid and he's very highely rated. Seems to have everything about him to become a very good defender. Problem is, we've said that about loads of other talents we've signed.

What was iIori signed for? Why do we even bother signing young center backs, when has that ever worked for us? - Kippe Djimi Paletta Hobbs WIlson Coates

Give them a chance or do some Chelsea style immediately parking them at decent clubs for a few years or just don't bother at all.

When was the last time the club successfully developed a defender? Carragher?

He'd do well staying clear of us.

[article=http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-3129522/Joe-Gomez-set-Liverpool-medical-ahead-6million-Charlton-Athletic.html]Joe Gomez is to undergo a medical at Liverpool on Friday ahead of becoming Liverpool's fourth signing of the summer.

Liverpool have triggered a release clause in the Charlton Athletic defender’s contract, which will enable them to sign him for an initial £3.5m which will likely rise to £6m on appearances.

The 18-year-old defender, who plays international football for England Under-19s, was also the subject of interest from Arsenal and Manchester City, but Liverpool appear to have beaten off the competition.

Sportsmail understands the Reds have trigged a release clause in the teenager's contract, paving the way for the move to be completed, and he will meet with club officials on Merseyside on Friday.

Gomez is one of the most sought-after young talents in the country after an impressive breakthrough season at The Valley, and his arrival is likely to signal the departure of centre-back Sebastian Coates to Sunderland on a £4million permanent deal.

He played 21 times in the Championship having made his debut aged 17. Gomez has represented England at Under 16, U17 and U19 levels and can also play at right back.

Borussia Dortmund were another club said to be interested in securing the services of Gomez, but the 18-year-old opted to stay in England.

Gomez will follow James Milner, Danny Ings and Adam Bogdan and could be joined by Southampton right-back Nathaniel Clyne once a £15m deal is agreed. [/article]

[article=http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/liverpool-fc-transfers-joe-gomez-9479476]The ECHO revealed earlier this week that the 18-year-old, who can play as a right back or centre back, had chosen to join the Reds, despite strong interest from a host of Premier League and European clubs, including Arsenal, Manchester City and Borussia Dortmund.

Liverpool have tracked his development extensively over the past three years, with head of recruitment Dave Fallows and chief scout Barry Hunter instrumental. Reds boss Brendan Rodgers has also received glowing reports from Sean O’Driscoll, the England U19 coach.[/article]
