i think a few people on here are getting a bit obsessed with our wage bill. why are we totally ignoring the fact that a lot of cole's and jovanovic's (not so much, but still) wages are offset against the small initial outlay? there's only so much of that money that can be saved, especially when you factor in the transfer fee we'd have to pay for a half-decent replacement.

That's true, however his injury record means we are paying him to not play particularly often, which makes it not particularly worthwhile.

but that'd still be the case if we'd paid a fee for him and got him on lower wages, it's just the money going out while he was injured would be going to chelsea and not cole. doesn't make a difference to us, it's still a waste.

and btw i'm not particularly disagreeing with you about cole. i think he's better than he's shown, but i was never very excited by his signing. purslow playing football manager, i'm afraid.

I thought players we're insured? Don't the insurance company pay their wages during injuries?
[/quote]

Quite possibly yes but I dont think it is that simple also. Even if it were that, we must be paying higher premiums for injury prone players on higher wages. Also we dont know how much the insurance company would pay when he is getting up to match fitness from an injury.

True. I bet Kewell's fees were astronomical.

Terry insists Cole is a "Chelsea boy" and believes that he deserves to be recognised for his efforts with the Londoners.

"Joe gave everything for this club and hopefully the fans will recognise that and give him the reception he deserves," explained Terry.

"He is a Chelsea boy, even when he was at West Ham he said he was a Chelsea boy as a kid.

"I was sorry to see him go, others were too. That's why I'm 100 per cent sure he'll get a great reception."

Terry remains close friends with Cole and despite the fact he has endured a slow start to life at Anfield, he is backing the midfielder to come good.

"He's a great lad and I'm still in contact with him," Terry continued.

"I watched his debut and him getting sent off - he should never have been sent off. Then he picked up a knock but he is confident in his own ability and me too.

"I'm sure he will have a huge part to play for Liverpool.
"

A player without a position.

Ineffective on the wings, too lightweight and inconsistent for central midfield, not enough goals in him to play as a support striker/attacking midfielder.

He has talent, and in the Spanish league he might look a world beater, but it's no coincidence he's spent the vast majority of his career on the bench: it's his best position.

I confess I thought the signing would be OK, given the fact there was no transfer fee and we had such a dearth of viable options for the wide areas, but as it stands I'd much rather we still had Benayoun.

Ultimately: meh
