Liverpool have reached a deal to sign highly-rated Colombian striker Jackson Martinez.
The 25-year-old - who plays for Mexican outfit 'Club de Fútbol Jaguares de Chiapas' - appears to have opted for a move to Anfield despite strong interest from Porto.
It is claimed that Liverpool have already signed off a financial agreement for the player who has scored 17 goals in 31 league appearances this season.
Speaking recently, Martinez said: "I'm not in negotiations with Liverpool or Porto but both clubs have a personal interest in me.
"I have not spoken to anyone as everything must go through the club or my agent. But in the next few months things should be finalised."
Martinez scored 65 times in 84 league games for former club Independiente Medellín between 2004 and 2010. He's been capped 13 times by Colombia and has scored 5 senior international goals.

17 goals in 31 games? not great is it? hopefully he's another sigourney weaver, without going offside every 2 minutes

Another addition to the South American contingent already here. If the fee is around 6m or less, i'll be quite pleased with this.

little bit more insight from talksport

1) Beginning at Medellin in his native Colombia in 2004, Martinez scored 65 times in 84 league games until his departure in 2010 to Mexican side Jaguares.
2) Tim Vickery, a regular contributor to talkSPORT on all things South America said in March: “He's an out-and-out goalscorer, a front-to-goal centre-forward who can finish off both feet, and with excellent spring that makes him a threat in the air.” However, he also added that his touch and general approach play are not great.
3) He made his Colombia debut in 2009 against Ecuador, scoring to give his country the lead in a match that finished 2-0. As of 17/04/12 Martinez has five goals in 10 games for Colombia.
4) He's already the captain of his club side, a full goal scoring international and at a reported £10m, is £15m cheaper than Andy Carroll.
5) Fast, strong, tall, good in the air and so far this season in the Primera División de Mexico he has eight goals in 15 games (24/03/12), with three assists, too. Could be the perfect partner for creative genius Luis Suarez, but then again, the Premier League is miles apart from Mexico's equivalent...
THEY SAY
“He's wanted by half of Europe, it's true. He's a major player, but the most concrete case is from Spain. Villarreal want him.”
Jackson Martinez's agent, Giovanni Fiore

some nice finishes there. Goalpoacher. We'll see how he adapts. But I see a lot of confidence there, I like the cut of his jib. I'll give him three months before he's dubbed a failure

How is that not great, thats over a goal every two games. Not everyone can match Messi and Ronaldo's ridiculous records!

If Portos scouts recommends him then Im sold.

Looks a great athlete and a very good finisher.

£10m?!

We'll spend this sort of figure on a totally unknown quantity and then we will bitch and whine when a top team want an extra £5m for a recognised talent

*im aware that given the above he'll now most likely be the new messiah and this post will get dragged up by Modo in 9 months time

no idea who he is, but heres a youtube video with lots of foreign shouting, he must be good

From that his movement to get space is excellent, and his heading is terrific. Don't like the sound of a lack of technical skill.

Watching that video brings back the Fast Show.

Martinez is a late bloomer of sorts, having crashed onto the scene three years ago with his hometown club, Independiente Medellin. In 2009, he broke the club’s single season scoring record with 18 goals. That same year, he led Medellin to their 5th league title. By the time he left for Jaguares in 2010, he’d bagged 65 goals in 84 league appearances, leaving him 6th on the clubs top scorers list. Martinez carried that form to Mexico, where he’s scored 30 goals in his 57 league appearances. They’re impressive numbers, regardless of competition.

Some have questioned how moving to Europe would affect Martinez’s confidence, which is so pivotal to his game. Others say he has a heavy first touch. But his combination of speed, strength, and a bit of that mandatory South American flair eclipses that. Factor in his ruthless finishing ability and you’re reminded of a Demba Ba or Papiss Demba Cisse- and that’s a tough similarity to ignore.

He looks very raw. The vid seems to go to shit about the 6 min mark with the odd flash of skill thrown in now and again

Look at that big frame, I'm sure he'll be a world class coke mule for the lizards, right Woland? Its worth 10m to make going to our games fun again.

Really....what do you expect mate?

That's better than 1 in 2...

I don't know anything about this lad, but i find it strange you picked that to criticize him. If you are looking for reasons to be depressed, then it can't be helped, i'm afraid...
