Jackson Martinez Can Be Liverpool’s Papiss Cissé

Porto are after him, which bodes well. They've uncovered more than their fair share of South American "gems" in recent years. What a buy Falcao was for them at 4M. Simply amazing.

Imagine the scene. Liverpool are struggling with Reading at Anfield. Off trots a frustrated and scary Andy Carroll. On comes, Jackson Martinez for his debut.
It’s 1-1, 84th minute. The Reds have already hit the bar three times. Lucas Leiva (oh my) wins the ball in midfield, passes to a half-broken Steven Gerrard, who swings it wide to Stewart “I was born to play Championship level sides” Downing.
Meanwhile, Suarez and Martinez are making zesty runs off one another. Stu zips a cross to the far post and OH! There’s Martinez, hungry and unmarked! He finishes brilliantly with his left foot and reels off to the corner flag to do his trademark somersault-to-kneeling celebration. The first teammate to drape themselves over his back is none other than, Luis Suarez and his unmistakable overbite.
lol

it's mad, though, it's not as if Falcao was unheard of. But I agree with the sentiment, Porto can spot a player. We should have gambled on Falcao.

Fuckin Jackson Martinez that creep can roll man.
Yep dude but he's a pervert.
Ahhh
No seriously the man's a sex offender,with a record.
He spent six months in Chino for exposing himself to an eight year old.
When he moved to Porto he had to go door to door to tell everyone he's a pederast.
What's a pederast Walter?
Shut the fuck up Donny.

By the way, ive never heard of him. And he is like 27 years old and has never left his homeland and has 10 caps.
Do not want.

I chose not to believe anything Tim Vickery says after his Lucas description

He's an exciting player of a type that Brazilian football hasn't produced too many of recently. Of late their central midfielders have tended to be 'holders' who sit and allow the full-backs to push forward. Lucas is different. He's a big, blonde figure whose power and physical strength comes with attacking ability. He can pass well and loves to rumble forward. He gets on the scoresheet both with blistering shots from range and from bursting beyond the strikers. You can certainly imagine him playing alongside Javier Mascherano, for example.

I don't think Vickery was wrong about Lucas then. We spent two years systematically shutting down all of those qualities. The fact he's managed to re-establish himself as a very different player isn't something any of us could have predicted.

I think that may have been a fair description of what Lucas was like before Benitez got hold of him!

Oddly enough I can't seem to recall him being a "big blonde figure with power and physical strength" in those days

I read that description from Vickery and find that EVERY word of what he says is exactly what Lucas is/was not.

And it's fucking ridiculous to suggest we held him back in anyway, just for the record.

I don't agree at all. Benitez loved playing Lucas and Mascherano together in front of the defence which never worked. On the rare occasions Benitez allowed Lucas to cross the half-way line, he always had a much better game. Lucas built his reputation as a box-to-box midfielder and Benitez didn't allow him that role.

I disagree completely. Benitez's tactics had nothing to do with how Lucas developed as a player. I've seen him play over a 100 games over 4 seasons for us, and he's shown not a single attribute of a capable attacking/box-to-box midfielder.

It is interesting that Vickery talks about his 'power, physical strength, attacking ability, passing, and blistering shots'. None of which Lucas was even mildly competent at 4 years ago. He was small, weak, used to hit woefully slow passes, and had a weaker shot than Henderson.

It isn't a coincidence that he's made his mark as a holding player with his ability to read the game, tackle decently, and pass safely, rather than being someone who's built his game around any of the qualities that Vickery so wrongly highlights.

*Also, in the Lucas-Mascherano partnership, Mascherano played the deeper position.

To be far Dmishra, Lucas is very strong these days. He's out muscled a lot of bigger players on many occasions earlier this season.

I don't deny that he's filled out.

But just read that description by Vickery and tell me you don't want to laugh out loud. I don't recall having read something so wrong for quite a while.

Have you ever seen any highlights of Lucas playing for Gremio? Vickery was correct in his assessment of Lucas at the time he made those comments.

Highlights shmighlights.

Dmishra is right. A player doesn't lose power, physical strength and attacking ability because he's moved from one league to another or is playing under a one set of tactics or another. These are core attributes that are evident no matter what.

Vickery is one of my favourite football journalists but he does get things wrong (as he'll happily admit) and that description of Lucas is something he most definitely got wrong.

You forgot the 'with all due respect' that time. What a charmer!

No, he wasn't, for all the reasons dmishra highlights. People can argue all they like about the player that Benitez turned him into, but unless you're suggesting that Benitez also robbed Lucas of physical attributes such as size, pace, and strength, then it's about as wrong as wrong can be.

however your attacking can be blunted if you are asked to play a more defensive role, look at gerrard in CM this season as an example.
