I agree. Can't we just jump in and nick Hull's loan deal for Negredo? Then we can offer Hull Wash in compensation.
If Rafa had been able to, or wanted to do this, he would have done it as part of the Alonso deal.

Its time to face facts lads. We dont have any money ( to spend on players). There are no big signings coming in. Any money we have is for reducing the Yanks' debt
So we can afford to offer £6m for a fourth-choice CB but we can't afford a one-year loan deal for a second-choice striker?
Tis not sensible.

Hertha are apperantly desperate to get Voronin back, and are rumoured with a move today. Maybe Rafa has an ace up his sleeve, and we'll see another striker coming in.

Negredo is not going on a one year loan. RM want £15M for him. Reports had suggested that Hull offered £12m. Cant see it myself

And you give out to me for being all doom and gloom.

Everyone is aware of the situation and I think it is why most aren't worried about challenging unless we get in a super second striker in the Villa bracket.

We simply can't expect gerrard and Torres to play 38 league games together and fire us to victory in the majority of them.

We'll do well to get third without another attacking signing.
Is it going to be another season of this "realistic" doom and gloom Pat? Do well to get third? We came second last season with basically the same squad, we have lost Alonso, United have lost Ronaldo + Tevez and Chelsea haven't added anyone to worry about as of yet. Yet we'll do well to get third? Come on.

Gerrard and Torres played 16 games together last season and we came second.

Probably been listening to ESPN.

'Liverpool and Arsenal have been significantly weakened; so have United but they've made an inspired signing in Owen who'll get 20 goals at least; the only possible threat to United is Chelsea who haven't been weakened.'

I don't think there are any facts in that Jack.
One fact is the Americans will want to protect their investment and the only way to do that is keep it successful.

Ok Vlads maybe not facts. But they do have to reduce the debt by £60M. People are thinking that we should have £30/40M to spend, based on sales and an original budget, but its not happening and there doesnt appear to be any sign of it happening.

So can see where my suspicions are founded?
I can accept suspicions Jack 😉
The only thing that undermines your argument is that he has splurged £17m, early doors, on a right back. An area that nearly everyone agrees was not a particularly high priority.
If he had such a limited budget as you, and others, have suggested would he not be a little cracked to do that?

I'd say it was an extraordinarily high priority when Arby had clearly been granted clearance to move making Degen our only 'recognised' RB. Even with Arby we were short staffed.

So not everyone agrees with that.

Hence the reason I used the word "nearly" Doc.

I agree.

At that stage RB was clearly our weakest position. Also when you take into account the fact that GJ is one of the very few talented English players who was available, you can understand why we moved so quickly on this deal.

It didn't mention league goals. 20 in all competitions would be an amazing return for someone who cost the best part of fuck all.

And for us he got 19 league goals twice and 18 twice - not too shabby.

Didn't want him back and would have been very disappointed if we had signed him up at the start of the summer, that said he would be better than nothing, which bafflingly is what we've ended up with.

Anyway he is dead to me now.

With our lack of activity in the transfer market, it look like three of our most criticised players (Babel, Lucas and N'gog) could well determine how we go in the Prem this season.

Out of all of our options i hope that we turn to Babel for the strikers role, if and when Torres can't play.

Why?

It'll be Kuyt who would fill in for Torres with Yossi reclaiming the RW spot, exactly like last season.

After that then yeah; Babel is the most suited.

It does look like we will need Babel and Lucas this season, I hope they are up to it, Babel is looking sharp in pre-season so fingers crossed.

You could well be right Squiggs, it's just what i'd like to see though.

If Babel's going to actually make the player that many of us think he can, then this is the season. I really hope we find a place in the team for him with possibly wide left being the first option, but then up front in Torres's absence.

I know it's a big gamble, but he has all qualities to make a very good striker imo.

Except a brain, seemingly. He reminds me of Cissé in the way he keeps getting caught offside.

kuyt filling in is fine as long as the other team want to play football. park the bus and it doesn't work all the time with torres there nevermind kuyt.

we need a more aggressive formation as well as at least one more attacking player either to compete with riera and/or lead the line with or instead of torres.

i saw babel yesterday and it reminded me why i think he won't make it here

I'm not going to start defending some of his shockingly bad games for us bunny, and i know that many will dismiss this out of hand. It's just that out of all of the players that we have that haven't established themselves with us , then Babel for me is the one that has the most potential to surprise us all this season.

In an ideal world then we'd obviously sign another very decent striker, but seeing as that doesn't look likely i'd opt for the player that could and should show the most improvement.

Some quality posts here, and Vlad and Ryan have hit the nail..

We were short when Keane was here, and now he's gone...

Rafa makes some amazing decisions, and is a genius at times. But along with this, comes some really silly ones we've all seen over the years. Really shockingly poor.

I hope to CHRIST, having one decent striker isn't one of those ideas he thinks is genius. Our title challenge depends on a *lot* of luck, unless a striker comes in.

ON the other hand:
If Babel shows up this season, and Gerrard stays fit as second striker, maybe it's not as bad as we think. Plus Acquaman is more attacking than Xabi.,...so if he's fit, it's another attacking dimension..

I don't know if he has the required brain and movement to ever be a good enough striker for us, but I agree with your general tone that we need to feature him more readily this season.

I still hold out some faith for him.

Owen was wanted by Hull and the media laughed. Fergie signs him and then all of a sudden its genious and he'll win them the league. 20 goals is laughable. He did fuck all for Newcastle and now 4 years later he's supposed to be the predator he ones was. Sorry but thats bullshit. A couple of goals against the Shanghai Giants and Kualalumpur Hotspurs doesnt change that.

I hate his guts after his recent comments and hope he flops big time. He's already learned how to act like a cunt on the pitch, they teach you that on the first day at Utd.

A loan move for Negredo would be ace. Yes please.
I can't work out if you are being facetious Ryan.
It has been my main concern for the last two, possibly three, years.

I said exactly the same this week about being short even when we had Keane and that if Torres gets injured we have to chose two from N'gog, Kuyt and Voronin. Babel is that good I even forgot about him.

Most of the replies were along the lines that we coped last year when Torres was missing, as much to say people can't see the problem. I really wish people would take their head out of the sand on this one.

Benitez obviously sees it too, simpering to the Spanish FA about playing Torres for fear he gets an injury before the start of the season. He is going to pull a rabbit from a hat on this, he has to, or leave us very exposed.
24 Carat serious Vlad.

I'm stunned that Rafa's ok with what he's got as his forward options.

Fucking Sunderland have more in their strikers department than us.

I've actually been wondering all pre season why yous didnt seem more concerned about not having another striker. 1 quality striker and a few ok ones really doesn't seem like enough to me.

Babel looks like he is mentally incapable when he plays football. His terrible rhymes for his rap songs further convinces me he is entirely dumb.

Even Bellamy, who was a bit retarded for all practical purposes, was intelligent enough to see the angles and predict the play in a football field......but Babel is just incapable.

If we ask him to play as a striker, i hope it's in a 4-4-2. He will never be able to adequately replace Torres in the system we played for the majority of last season.
