And it seems we don't have enough strikers. In fact, it seems like we've got one good one, and a then... Well, then we've got 'options'.

Was anyone else aware of this?

If not, let me spell it out for you:
We've got Torres. He's good, but spent half of last season injured, which cost us a League Title.
Then we've got David N'gog, who is 20 years of age and has scored 3 goals for us.
After him, we've got Andriy Voronin, who we've tried, unsuccessfully, to get rid of.
Aside from that, there's Dirk Kuyt, who's our best right-winger.
And Ryan Babel, who's our best substitute.

So, all in all, one good striker, and even he's prone to injuries.

We were short in this department even when we had Robbie Keane, and yet he hasn't even been replaced.

Rafa's fucking mental if he thinks one good striker is enough. I can't believe we're on the eve of a season with Torres, and 'options'.

It's ok, Rafa has submitted a request to the FA for a change of rules.

If a clubs first choice striker scores more than one goal in a game and his team wins the game by more than one goal you can keep those extra goals as 'credit' for when said strikers is injured. Then the team just adds those credits/goals on to any games that the strikers misses through injury.

WHY WASN'T I AWARE OF THIS? NOW MY THREAD JUST LOOKS STUPID.

And you give out to me for being all doom and gloom.

Everyone is aware of the situation and I think it is why most aren't worried about challenging unless we get in a super second striker in the Villa bracket.

We simply can't expect gerrard and Torres to play 38 league games together and fire us to victory in the majority of them.

We'll do well to get third without another attacking signing.

Hmmmm and that would be why we challenged and finished only 4 points off winning it last season ?

We can do the same again this season, and I don't expect us to have as many injuries again - we were unlucky in that respect in 2008/9.

Voronin will score goals, but we still need a better back up striker or N'Gog / Nemeth to unexpectedly come good to first team standard.

If we get in another high quality striker we must be out and out favourites and I still think we will see 2 or 3 more arrivals before the end of the transfer window.

as long everyone chips in with goals it wont be an issue, it wasn't an issue last season seeing as we were the league leading scorers with our top scorer missing for large parts of the season.
we're going to have to knuckle down and get on with it I doubt we're signing any attacking players this transfer window.

I agree. Can't we just jump in and nick Hull's loan deal for Negredo? Then we can offer Hull Wash in compensation.
[/quote]

I'd rather offer them Voronin!

Fuck it, they can have 'em both.

I can't work out if you are being facetious Ryan.
It has been my main concern for the last two, possibly three, years.

I said exactly the same this week about being short even when we had Keane and that if Torres gets injured we have to chose two from N'gog, Kuyt and Voronin. Babel is that good I even forgot about him.

Most of the replies were along the lines that we coped last year when Torres was missing, as much to say people can't see the problem. I really wish people would take their head out of the sand on this one.

Benitez obviously sees it too, simpering to the Spanish FA about playing Torres for fear he gets an injury before the start of the season. He is going to pull a rabbit from a hat on this, he has to, or leave us very exposed.

If Rafa had been able to, or wanted to do this, he would have done it as part of the Alonso deal.

Its time to face facts lads. We dont have any money ( to spend on players). There are no big signings coming in. Any money we have is for reducing the Yanks' debt

I don't think there are any facts in that Jack.
One fact is the Americans will want to protect their investment and the only way to do that is keep it successful.

Serious question - who was the last senior first team player that was signed completely out of the blue?

I'm asking because we haven't been linked to anyone in a long time.

Alexis Sanchez?

My priorities at the start of the window were: 1) Awesome, flexible LW, 2) Back-up (but good) striker 3) experienced LB, and none of these have been addressed so I can't pretend I'm happy about the window. But I think there's a certain amount of doom-mongering going on with regards the striker issue. To dismiss how well we coped without Fernando Torres last season is completely unfair to the players who stepped up in his absence, and in particular I wouldn't bet against Kuyt - who scored most of his goals as a striker - and Yossi Benayoun being equally effective this term.

Ideally we'll bring someone in. I thought Bent would've been perfect, but I hope Rafa has someone else in mind.

Ok Vlads maybe not facts. But they do have to reduce the debt by £60M. People are thinking that we should have £30/40M to spend, based on sales and an original budget, but its not happening and there doesnt appear to be any sign of it happening.

So can see where my suspicions are founded?

I can accept suspicions Jack 😉
The only thing that undermines your argument is that he has splurged £17m, early doors, on a right back. An area that nearly everyone agrees was not a particularly high priority.
If he had such a limited budget as you, and others, have suggested would he not be a little cracked to do that?

Ok but even that had an aspect of wheeling and dealing in that we were owed money from the Crouch deal, and I assume he knew Arbeloa was going.

I hope Im wrong but I cant see any surprises before 31st August.

The money we were owed from the Crouch deal probably just made it a bit easier for Pompey , as far as we would have been concerned it was still real money shown on our books.
He did know Arbeloa was going as it was probably his decision.
He has money , of that I am sure. The problem is more likely availability of the players he would like.

I'd say it was an extraordinarily high priority when Arby had clearly been granted clearance to move making Degen our only 'recognised' RB. Even with Arby we were short staffed.

So not everyone agrees with that.

So we can afford to offer £6m for a fourth-choice CB but we can't afford a one-year loan deal for a second-choice striker?

He could easily have signed Owen on a free and had decent back-up. As not doing that he must have a plan!
