Benitez added: "We are scoring more goals and not really worried that we have conceded a few more. Our aim is to score goals and win matches, keeping clean sheets is a bonus. This has been a very good goal-scoring start to the season, I'm told the best for over 100 years at this club.

"But even if you score goals and also concede, then someone will see the negative of that," Benitez went on. "But we always look to the positives, we are scoring a lot of goals and we aim to continue to do the same. We can improve in defence, of course, and I would like a lot of goals and none conceded, but that is hard to do if you do try to attack.

"We will try to find the balance but I find it is easier to improve defences because you can work in training on basics, repeating the same things. With strikers it depends more on the quality of the player, that is more difficult."

wow..

Rafa??? what has happend to you??

Its almost like he has gone on a year backpacking trip around the world. Almost slept with a ladyboy, was kidnapped by Moroccan drug dealer, sold as a slave in Tunisia and had some pretty scary moments in Sao Paulo.. Add this with the participation in Aid relief in congo and he has come back a completely different man.

its okay to conceed?? that is such a massive change in footballing philosophy for him...

king of spin?? a bit of propaganda?

Rafa??? what has happened to you??[/quote]

x2 (not that I have any issues)

our conceding of goals really has very little to do with being more attacking minded. we tend to concede from set plays and confusion in defence not from counter attacks or through our full backs being out of position. there is no reason why this should be 'hard to do'

That's not entirely correct.

I think rafa looks at the 12 draws ands sees last season as a massive oppertunity lost.
also when you look at the squad the best players are pretty attack minded so why seek to curb that?

On this note....

Did we have people on the posts last year?? I'm pretty sure we did.

the lack of people on the posts this season could be blamed for a couple of goals.

s not worth having people on the posts, basically if zonal marking is executed correctly all the defenders attack the first ball as a unit at the same time you push up so if an opposition player touches the second ball chances are he'll be off side. we just haven't been attacking the ball or pushng up fast enough.

I think in their amazement everyone missed this bit.............."We will try to find the balance but I find it is easier to improve defences because you can work in training on basics, repeating the same things. With strikers it depends more on the quality of the player, that is more difficult."

Its just a temporary thing, while he works on them.

Its all very well throwing caution to the wind and work on a we will score more goals that the opposition basis while you have the best striker in the world up front, but what happens when he is not there?
Does someone wave a magic wand over the defence?

regards

In his defence he does say
We will try to find the balance
, so he's aware that you can't be all one thing or all the other.

Let's face it if you have the world's best striker you must give him every opportunity to outscore the opposition. If he doesn't do this he's accused of stifling talent or managing a defensive minded team.

He can't win really, can he?

Over the past half a year or so we've seen some attacking displays emulating the one of Valencia when they beat us at Anfield.

We've gone from a 'rather boring and predictable team' in the past to an almost free-scoring, attacking-minded one.

Actually when I think about it I can't mention one team in the league I'd rather watch from an entertainment point of view to be honest. It's probably Barca or us when it comes to the most 'sexy' teams around.

Cudos Rafa.

We're going to win the league.

I remember falling asleep in front of the TV watching Liverpool played during the previous manager (no name mentioned). Hoof ball up to Heskey. Knock it down to Owen. Repeat ad infiniti. Embarassing really.

Now, I cannot peel my eyes off during the match. What a difference.

We can still be OCCASIONALLY predictable at times and on a few occasions last season we were boring, but on other occasions we were quite simply awesome. The home game against Real was possibly our best performance under Rafa IMO.

Benitez may be a stubborn fucker at times but he's realised how costly a draw is in the Premier League and has adjusted his tactics accordingly.

Sign of a very good manager.

m'bro away last season was just as turgid as some of gh's worst displays.
derby away 2001 - was as good as some of the best football we are playing now.

you know we actually had less than 50% possession that game?

and don't try to tell me that paddy berger's goal that day was a brilliant team goal, cos it just wasn't. not that you were going to do that, but just so you know.

20 plus passes before paddy got bored and lashed it home.

it annoys the hell out of me when people have a go at gh. any successful manager has to do the following

a) make your team hard to beat
b) win trophies

gh did both of those things, all right it turned sour in the end but gh did more good than bad whilst he was at anfield.

who cares? doesn't make it a brilliant passing move. there was no pressure, no incision, just a training-ground kickabout. it's not like all that passing even created a chance - berger still had to shoot from more than 20 yards.

no manager will achieve 'b' without first tackling 'a' that's why leeds and n'castle ended up winning fuck all whilst liverpool won a treble.

it's been four years since we won a trophy, micky mouse or not.

3 years brother, 3 years.

i presume since we're in Ged mode we're counting the 2006 community shield?

and, tbh, if it's not the CL or the league, i don't really give a toss about winning trophies. i'm much happier with LFC right now than i was in the summer of 2001.

you can't mint a big silver 3 (or worse a big silver 4) and parade it round the streets of liverpool in an open top bus. No arguement we are a stronger team and the league is the be all and end all but 3 years without a cup is three years without a cup. lest we forget when gh won the 'mickey mouse treble' liverpool had gone SIX YEARS without winning anything.
