Is there a good team there?

I know we have our flaws, we need a centre back, a winger and a striker, but what would your preferred first XI be with what we've got, and do you think it's a strong side?

Although we miss a towering presence at the back, we still have some very good defenders and alot of our problems have been down to the system rather than the personnel, while we have a couple of REALLY good midfielders and we have Gerrard and Torres, which is enough to prevent any side from slipping from the European places. Anyway, here's my side:

-------------Reina-------------------
Kelly--Carra--DA/MS-Konchesky
-------Gerrard-Meireles-----------
Johnson------------------J.Cole---
---------Kuyt---Torres--------------

Especially for home games, is that such a bad side? I can take or leave Johnson in the side, and maybe push Kuyt wide and play Patches or find room for Shelvey, who I think looks an excellent prospect, but anyway, the team above with the addition of the likes of Shelvey is a good, balanced side that is good enough to be in the top six. I know we should be pushing for glory so I'm not lowering my sights, but realistically and competitively I think that side can aim for a top six finish, with the right manager obv.

The main concern as we well know is the depth of what's available, the fringe is shite with the likes of Lucas, Poulsen, Maxi, Jova, N'Gog and Babel, but if we stick with that side we can only get better.

No, it isn't a bad side, and there are managers out there who would do a sod of a lot better with our squad than Roy's managed.

I don't think we're as good as many think we are, but we're still a lot better than our current showing.

I agree that this is probably one of our best sides, but it's still fraught with problems

- Kuyt's never shined with Torres up front
- Johnson's still an experiment on the RW
- So in Meireles in a CM with Gerrard with no protection
- And the one you mentioned, there's no aerial cover in any of the CB's.

On paper it's our best side, but it's still one big experiment really. And if this doesn't work I don't know what we can do, because we do not have the players for either 4-2-3-1 or 4-4-2, which pushes us towards a 4-3-3, and even more unknown territory.

Yeah it is a good team given the right circumstances. And it would also leaves us alternatives as you say inPatches etc. And it is material to change formations with also when needed.... It aint rocket science, its only footie 😉

The team that Mark posted looks a very decent side indeed imo. I'd even go as far as saying that we don't need to invest huge amounts of money into our squad in order to elevate us into being genuine title contenders.

If we can ship out the like of Insua, Aquilani, Babel and Poulsen and maybe add say another £20-£30mil to the transfer kitty, i don't see why we can't put together a very respectable LFC squad.

We've an excellent team, and need a deeper squad. I'm confident once we get in a real steady pair of managerial hands, one we can all believe in, not some other hopeful punt, that we'll be back where we belong. Any chance Roffa could come back as the 2004-2007 Roffa?

Can't just blame Roy, the players Mark has should be better than 18th regardless of who manages them and what positions they're playing in.

Tossers.

agreed, this team should easily make top half of the table at bare minimum.....

I was so impressed with Shelvey the other night, some of his balls into the box were good quality, he really does look like he could turn into a Gerrard kind of player. I'd throw him in a few more times in the Premiership over the next few months. I really think he could flourish and will be a better player than Poulsen, Lucas in no time.

Agreed, it's just the modern game though isn't it? They're all quick to moan about wages, a lack of ambition, not getting the right treatment, etc. Why don't they just remember why they're there in the first place instead of sulking on the pitch about things not going well.

Fucks me right off.

Reina
Kelly Carra Agger Konch
Meireles
Kuyt Gerrard Cole
Torres

This side is definitely our strongest.

Now I'd play 4-3-3 despite our lack of width, simply because our best attacking players suit this system. Ideally we'd have a better LB cos that flank would be exposed but unfortunately we havent!

It feels like I've been saying this forever now, but 4-3-3 is still easily our best option. It allows us to field our most competitive midfield and it puts our so called wide men in positions further up the pitch that they find more natural.

It's clearly not our strongest side FFF.

Perhaps he's arguing that by playing without Lucas or Poulsen, we'd actually be stronger.

In that case then he might have a point keni.

Regardless of the DM question, there HAS to be a case for seeing Gerrard, Meireles and Shelvey in the same side. Surely?

I wouldn't call our strongest 11 a good team, no.

Too many chinks in the armour. Piss weak middle of the park, Stevie aside.

Absolutely nothing out wide.

Only one truly capable forward.

CB's are good enough. Same cant be said for the full backs.

Need a big january or summer before we can start banding ambitious terms like 'good' about 😉

Haha - yeah, we're deffo better off with only 10 than with either of them.

The problem we have now is that we dont have a specialist defensive midfielder (who's any good - so that rules out Poulsen)

Therefore, I think we'd be best going with a 442, with Gerrard and Meireles in the middle and Torres and Ngog up front. Cole on the left and Kuyt on the right.

Whether thats a good team though is debatable.

I'm not saying it's good, but it's our strongest.

*whispers*

You've only picked 10 players mate...

I'd like to think he wrote Lucas or Poulsen in invisible ink, to reflect their performances on the field.

hahaha.

In my defence I'm hungover (though I've just cracked open my second can so it's on the wain).

Should be Ngog in behind Torres, whenever he plays he creates space for Nando to exploit.

Since the 11th player is either Lucas or Poulsen, I dont think it was a slip-up.
[/quote]

It's not, I wouldnt play with a DM, we dont need one when they're both SHITE.

-------------Reina-------------
Glen---Carra--Agger---Kon-
--------Gerrard--Meireles----
-Kuyt-------Cole---------Jova-
-------------Torres--------------

I think our best team would have Cole playing in the centre (he shows his best glimpses of quality when he drifts centrally). I'm not really sure about the left side as Jovanovic is has shown a lot of desire but little quality or end product.

This team also relies on Glen not playing like a chump as he has been so far this season
