Is the Magners League the best League in the World?

There was the beginnings of a debate around this question on TV last night, but my dinner was burning so I had to rush to the kitchen. By the time I got back to the show, it was all over bar the shouting.

Well, is it? I've obviously no idea, but am keen to find out...

I think it's the old Hungarian league.

Don't know why this isn't in Football Forum. Damn gypsies must have wandered over here.

*gets coat, whistles, walks off*

Just looked it up, didn't know they all played in the same league.

Don't know if its strongest, S14 (or S15 as now is) would stake a claim prob.

Which reminds me, the new Super15 club is in your neck of the woods. I was surprised they got it to be honest, they're struggling a bit over here, I assumed they'd consolidate in SAfrica where its more popular. Melbourne's a bit chocker Sport wise. They have the best RL team in the World and they're not even that popular.

Well, it was either Melbourne or some another SA team (and the one put forward from there was a garbage bid apparently, but anyway, I agree 100%. I can't really see it taking off. There's just too much here as it is. The Storm have done well enoguh to get a bit of a cult following, but nobody really gives a fuck about Union here, and there are far too many other codes taking enough money off the punters as it is.

The AFL have been cuter with the new franchise in Sydney RL territory. With the dispensation they get for salaries, draft picks and player trades (if I've read it right), with the coach they've just installed it will be hard not to be one the Comp's best teams surely?

If he means best cider sponsored league in the world, I'd bet it is in the running.

It's definitely not, but it does have the potential to be.

But from an Irish point of view it's perfect as it is because it's where we blood the younger players coming through while keeping the senior pros fresh during the season.

Hmmmm, well yes and no really mate.

The Gold Coast side have got one up on them in that they've been able to effectively groom the nation's best youngsters for a few years now, had them training with them, and been able to see the best of them up close. When it comes to their draft concessions, they'll choose the best kids going, even if they are a year or two younger than the usual draft pick. I'd preasume that means picking kids that West Sydney would have earmarked too.

GWS will still have a major amount of picks, but there'll all going to be kids, which means it's gonna take at least 3 or 4 years for them to be any good, even then you're never certain how these kids will turn out.

Is the French league not the richest and one of the most competitive leagues about.

Money aside, obviously, Southern Hemisphere Rugby pisses on European, you don't have to be Rob Andrew (ha ha) to know that. The World Cup's not about that tho. Anyone can win on the day. Hence England (appalling) getting to the Final.

Australia must have been really fucking shit then.

I told you they were in the other thread.

What a smashing game between Leinster and Munster there. Heaslip seems to be getting even better- has to be in the top handfull of forwards in World rugby- immense.

They'll need to play very well indeed to take Leinster on that evidence.

Home advantage could well prove the difference in this game mate (so Leinster will start as favourites).

Should be a cracking game regardless though, both teams are filled with quality.

It was a superb game, there was a real intensity to all the battles around the park. It looked like there was a serious amount of bad blood between a lot of the Irish players too which was surprising. Horgan's tackle on Ronan early on was disgraceful, O'Leary's high tackle on Healy was equally bad, but there was a lot of off the ball exchanges too that were a bit nasty.

I couldn't understand why Wallace was on the bench for Munster, it gave the Leinster back row the upper hand and they took full advantage.

loads.

We're missing about half of our first choice side, but it should prove a good thing in the sense that there's a number of players who we need to blood before the World Cup

Same with us.

I've seen that the Kiwi's are blooding a few players too, so hopefully that might help limit the damage.

If we can come away having lost by around 15-20 points, then i think we'll have done ok. I don't know why but I'm still looking forward to watching the games.

I'm going to the Aus v Eng game next Saturday.

What's the likely England team? Who's in form?

[/quote]

The team is:

Foden

Cueto
Tindall
Hape
Ashton

Flood
Care

Payne
Thompson
Cole
Shaw
Palmer
Croft
Moody (c)
Easter

Foden and Ashton are in-form newbies (relatively new anyway) while Tindall and Cueto are more experienced and also in good nick. Up front, watch out for Thompson and Cole in the front row, the immense (in every respect) Simon Shaw in the second row and a very rough, tough back row which will be itching to mix it with their much vaunted Aussie counterparts.

The Irish lads on here have got to be quite proud of this performance.

Mealamu was a very lucky boy to get away with his punch (again).

I saw only the last two mins of the game.

Forgot what time ti was on at. Heaslip sent off and we got humped - what's to be proud of ?
