Klopp also confirmed that Academy graduate Jon Flanagan is closing in on a return after a nightmare 18-month battle with a knee injury. The 22-year-old right-back hasn’t played for the Reds since May 2014 but is expected back in full training next week.

The defensive ranks will also be bolstered over the coming weeks by Mamadou Sakho, who is continuing his rehabilitation following knee ligament damage.

“Flanno will come back in next week. Then we’ll have two full-backs left, two right. “We have four centre-backs when Mama is back. Kolo was the fourth because of his age but now he’s always available.

“In midfield we have Hendo back so that’s like a new option for us. “We didn’t use them until now. We have other offensive players and we have more strikers than others, so where is the space?

“In January I don’t know how many games we have, maybe every three days, so we have to be prepared.

Sunday’s Premier League clash with West Brom at Anfield will be their seventh game in the space of just 22 days. With the festive schedule to come, there will be little let-up.
Liverpool will play at least seven matches in January as they look to compete for a Champions League spot and battle it out in both domestic cup competitions. The Europa League will be back on the agenda in February.

However, with the club’s injury problems easing Klopp believes they have sufficient strength in depth to cope.
Daniel Sturridge may be sidelined but Philippe Coutinho made his comeback against Sion after a hamstring issue and there was a first start since August for captain Jordan Henderson.

“We wanted Hendo to start (against Sion). He was very positive. He could have done 90 but we took him out because of Sunday because of what could have happened in the last 10.

“Phil (Coutinho) came on and nearly injured himself controlling the ball and hitting himself in the face – now he knows how I felt my whole career ! (Hahaha) ! “Of course we could have left him on the bench but it was important to give him a few minutes. If you’re always afraid of injuries, you get them for sure.

Lucas Leiva, Joe Allen and Alberto Moreno will all return to the squad on Sunday after being rested for the trip to Switzerland. Jordon Ibe is also expected back after being sidelined by a virus.

JK says Sakho could return to action next week: “Mama was back in training with the squad yesterday.”

JK on Coutinho/Henderson return: "It's important we don't place it all on two players. It's good to have more options"

Is it just me, or has this season been particularly bad for injuries?

Was it a bad tackle on Lovren? I didn't see the match.
It was the "innocent" follow through that was nasty and done all the damage.
Dawson tried pretty much exactly the same tackle on Skrtel earlier in the match which makes be think there was a element of premeditation in it.

Gardner has a history with those type of tackles. He knew what he was doing and the follow through was bad.
Could have been a red card imho.

Pulis defended him and said we had made worse tackles during the game.

Yeah - but I think we missed - I know Skrtel did with one of his, and so did Can in one of them.

To be fair a lot of players will take the opportunity to hurt someone 'fairly' if they get the chance. Some of our favorites have done it, pretty sure Gerrard would and this from Flanagan is pretty similar:

And a lot of people will say if you don't go into these tackles hard that's when you end up getting hurt...

Actually the more i watch that Flanagan tackle the less similarity i find, I'd give him the benefit if the doubt but he loves a crunching tackle.

You have a point, especially about Stevie, he could quite legally leave a player afraid to go near the ball for the rest of the game with one of his tackles. However in your example GIF, Flanagan's feet are never more than an inch off the ground, it's a clean classic bone-cruncher.

That is true, it's not comparable in that he doesn't follow through to such a massive extent. I do think he could have gone in differently though but then what if Soldado showed his studs to the tackle - it's a classic you don't go in hard you get hurt. I'll take back any accusations of nastiness with that one.

That reminds me of Gerrards tackle on Koscielny or Vermaelen, can't remember which but it had very little impact on the play but I'm sure a few of the Arsenal players needed a change of underwear.

tackle no.1 launches Vermaelen in the air, makes me laugh every time
no. 2 versus Pienaar - an example of trying to hurt someone imo, did he get sent off for that?

(watch out for the awful music)

Daniel Sturridge could boost Liverpool's thin striking options after revealing on Saturday he is close to a return.

Sturridge is one of a number of Liverpool players on the sidelines with hamstring trouble, and he has missed their last four games after making a brief return to action at the end of November. The 26-year-old has only appeared in six games this season, scoring four goals, and the Boxing Day win over Leicester saw Liverpool's striking options further reduced.

He said on Twitter: "Perfect gift for Christmas from the boys getting a win. On a sidenote I'm back training and good to go!!"
