Off topic, I really looked forward to see Ings get some time in the Prem for us, too see what he was made of.

Awful luck he's had with us.

I wonder what he will do with his time away from football..

It would be a good idea to send him on a few scouting missions to lower league clubs. He'll feel a bit more valued and involved, he'll have a personal sense of sympathy with forwards working their way up like he did, and at worst he won't report anything relevant but at best he might spot someone worth proper monitoring and he'll also learn a lot about the broader attacking game from having a spell viewing it with a critical eye. Obviously he's got ages of lonely rehab ahead but it would be a small but shrewd move to encourage him to think about the game in this way while he waits for the time to pass. Better that than stupid gigs with LFCTV or 'fun' events with Mighty Red.

Terrible news for the lad and for the club. Macca's right, the club really needs to consider his mental health as well as physical.

We should sell him. He doesn't have a place in Klopp's system and we're arguably doing his career damage even when he is fit.

There's no point paying the wages of a man who's both frequently injured and doesn't have a place when he's fit. For his own sake, he needs to a club which play for his strengths and I'd suggest a move back to Burnley. They're the only club in the league who routinely play with two strikers.

I'm not sure we can answer that with any real conviction, given how little he has played. As for selling him, I don't think that's likely when he's going to be out until next season.

He has had a terrible run of injuries at exactly the wrong times. Sad that his Liverpool career has still to really happen for him, if it ever was going to anyway.

He's not shifting Firmino, Sturridge or Origi out of the striking position though, which leaves him the attacking midfield slots to compete for and maybe some cup games up front. Even with the prospect of Europe next year, 3 strikers for 1 position seems enough. As Keni said in another thread, good player, nice guy, wrong club.

Dont want to sell him without giving him a decent chance first. Weren't there like 10 different clubs interested this summer with a few prepared to pay 20 mill £?

Someone will be interested if it doesnt work out for him here.

I don't agree at all. Ings is an attacking player who is industrious, clever and tactically disciplined who'll fit very snugly indeed into Klopp's idea of a fluid forward unit. He's versatile - he can play centre forward, behind the centre forward, right wing, left wing, a Ray Houghton-type link man between midfield and attackers. He's got a great attitude, far more talent than some who haven't seen him fit and in form seem to believe - don't forget the poor sod had won an England call-up just before his first injury - and he's as willing a pupil as a coach could hope to have. As a potential regular forward, as an invaluable utility figure, he's well worth keeping, encouraging and giving a proper chance.

Yes, a fine post indeed

I did have a litttle shudder when Houghton was namechecked, as I never really warmed to him for some reason

Probably unfairly

I loved Houghton but looking back I think it was because I was short and fat with the same shit haircut at the time.

I have never seen Ray Houghton play but from Macca's description:

"Ray Houghton-type link man between midfield and attackers"

Comical Aly's description:

"short, shit haircut".

I am beginning to understand your Firmino hatred. 😉

Houghton was possibly underrated because he was in a team with so many more obviously gifted players; like Barnes, McMahon and Beardsley

He was a very industrious right midfielder, who lacked the pace or sublime skill of the aforementioned Barnes, so comparisons were unfortunate

Had a happy knack for scoring important goals though, and - a bit like Spackman, or Whelan - he made the team better, without being as obviously a match winner as some of his more illustrious team-mates in the late 80s sides

Never forget his headed winner in the Derby, but as a player was never one of my favourites or the crowd's

That said, it's not as if we had a fabulous RM player whose place he took. Craig Johnston was even less gifted technically

Yeah and Lucas had a pretty shit haircut when he came too.

Oxford in 1987 were the Southampton of the day.

Bought Aldo and Houghton off them for about 800,000 each

So maybe not exactly the same, given those prices seem reasonable

Yep. He scored more important goals for Republic of Ireland than any other Scottish man ever has.

Great post Macca

It seems a bit weird that you'd forget Rule 1 before you even get to Rule 2

You've only got one rule to remember at that point in the process.

I'd suggest that if you need reminding about Rule 1 before you even address Rule 2, you're a fucking idiot. Or have some kind of brain injury
