We certainly are not acting like it. Are we ?

I don"t buy into the theory that we're sitting on a fortune that Klopp doesn't want to spend.

I'm sure he'd prefer to be signing Aubamayang to bringing Kent back from his loan spell

I guess the real question is whether the Coutinho money is ours to spend, or if it was basically counter balanced by the purchases of VVD and Keita.

Even if we buy relatively big in the Summer, it'll be difficult to tell if that's just from this season's revenue, or actual funds from selling Coutinho. We balked at paying too much to bring in Kieta now (apparently), and we're keen to get £120k per week Sturridge off the books, while rightly not wanting to throw too much money at Emre Can.

Are we being careful and sensible? Are we more restricted than the club is trying to let on? Or are we just plainly and quite obviously spending and selling within our means, to break even with little actual ambition to back it up?

Rafa, Kenny, Rodgers and now Klopp have spent relatively big, with mixed results, compounded by poor prioritising and an underlying lack of ambition from the club.

The club and Klopp are gambling that we will still be able to get top 4 and champions league for next season, it worked last year so they are trying again. Be interesting to see what competition gets priority if we get further into the champions league knock out.

Posted this in another thread but will drop it here as well.

I think it's a bit of the two above.

Whilst the financial position has improved under FSG, our wage bill seems to increase in line with our revenue and the stadium improvements are also impacting us in the short term. Another CL qualification could see things change substantially.

But at the moment if we're looking to get Markovic and Sturridge off the wage bill and don't seem to have arrivals in mind ...... we're sacrifing squad depth for financial savings.

Maybe we're trying to make some room for a new arrival ... ?

I actually think that from the Coutinho sale only 50-70M is allowed for spending MAX OR zero for transfers as it may be to cover the cost of VVD and Keita.

I honestly thought that we would replace Coutinho with someone - its actually shocking. I mean say what you want but when Torres went we bought un Suarez and big Andy straight away although Suarez was planned already. The fact that we have not even done anything to bring in an extra attacker is just a massive risk.

I think a combo of increased matchday revenue and increased tv dosh means we are eating at a slightly better table than we were - just a few weeks back out record transfer was less than £40M.

Has anyone worked out what our current squad is worth in today's insane market? If Can had a 3 year contract still, would he even be worth more than £25M? Would we get £10M for Henderson? Would we get £5M for Ming?

We got 15M for Jordon Ibe, 5M for Lucas and more than 20M for Sakho after he's been frozen out for a year

I'm not arsed about the value of the current squad, but @Ijg pic shows just how little ambition these reptilians have, while making a fucking a fortune.

We've spent what 140-150M combined on two players in the last 6 months, shattering our transfer record on both occasions in the process?

I tend to buy into the 'he hasn't found a player he likes' theory to be honest. Who replaces Coutinho? Not many to be honest. Sure you could go out and wax 50M on some cunt for the sake of spending money but he seems to be the type to only buy when he's pretty darn sure.

I'd prefer if he'd found that replacement before the end of the January fucking window, but I'd imagine there's another fucking fortune going to be spent in the summer.

Mike Gordon: Liverpool will not change transfer strategy despite Main Stand cash boost

FSG president says wins are made on the pitch, not in the transfer market

Fenway Sports Group president Mike Gordon has described the new-look Anfield as a “very large step forward” - but says increased revenues won’t lead to a change in Liverpool’s transfer strategy.
The new Main Stand is expected to generate an extra £25million per year with the 8,500 extra seats increasing capacity to 54,074.
However, Gordon says it’s not about trying to match the spending power of clubs like Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea. He’s more interested in seeing talent develop as Jurgen Klopp looks to get the most out of what Gordon believes is a Liverpool squad packed full of talent.
Asked if the revenue from the new Main Stand would level the playing field with their rivals, Gordon said: “I don’t know if I’d say it’s a game changer. It’s a very large step forward and it will help.

“Whether it will mean that we’re going to spend along the lines of Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea or Arsenal, I worry more about getting the most out of the money that we spend rather than competing in the transfer market on a pound for pound basis.
“Wins and losses are made here (points to the pitch), not in the transfer market. I’m really happy with the team that we have, the one that we’ve built over the last several years.
“We’ve spent a fair amount of money, and I think we’re going to see that on display this season and in the seasons to come.”

Meh, maybe its a good thing to push me further from caring. I'll probably thank them for it soon enough

One of them innit. We all knew we was fucking this situation up. Make it easy? Nah. Let's Liverpool the fuck out of this and make it really hard to do well cos its the 'Liverpool way'

Gang o cunts

Agree on the Coutinho replacement part. But why not spend on a new goalkeeper. They are relatively affordable.

Given that we have known Coutinho was off why was his replacement not identified. If said replacement wasnt available til the summer then why did we sell Coutinho now, hes on a long contract its not like his vakue would plummet between now and June.

This is Suarez all over again, we knew he was leaving, we got a massive fee for it. Didnt bother to reinvest and torpedoed any chance of a successful season.

But why are we letting Sturridge go? Surely he's worth a place on our bench if he's fit to play. Unless there is another coming in.

Goalkeepers are even less likely to leave in the January transfer window.
I’m guessing we’ve been told to do one by both Roma and Atletico.

We’ve spent 75mill on a single player this window, so I don’t think it’s the lizards not backing him, I just don’t think teams (unless they’re us and stupid) are willing to let a player go unless you’re offering 5x their regular value or something. E.g say mahrez is available for 40mill in the summer, but they want 200mill now for him, would anyone be happy to pay 200mill for him? I’d rather wait and buy him and 4 others in the summer of the same level, for the same money in the summer.

We won't sign anyone. And we've offloaded Sturridge to get him off the wage bill, so we're essentially left with Ings who has been out for the best part of two years and Dominic Solanke, who is struggling to get going. We've got a wonderful front three, but with Mane struggling, it's one injury away from disaster.

Yep.

Solanke will come good - and to be honest we knew when we signed him he was not going to be world class straight away - but cast your mind back to Peter Crouch - took him I think something like 15 odd games before he scored - then ended up with 17 goals or something for the season. Players rarely get that many chances these days.
