In the wake of the charge Babel was backed by both Dalglish and Gordon Taylor, chief executive of the Professional Footballers’ Association.

Even Blackpool manager Ian Holloway has jumped to his defence.

He said: “I thought it was funny – I thought the ref looked really cool in a Man United shirt to be honest!â€

“I saw him in the toilet at the match I went to the other night at Stockport. I said ‘come on, what sort of game did you have against Man United? Was that a sending off and was that a penalty?’

“We had a bit of a laugh about it, but to pick on young Ryan Babel for that – how can you fine him for that? It’s rubbish.â€

He's getting a bit clingy now, isn't he.

Liverpool for the title? With Charlie about, I Adam and Eve it

I jumped off my seat when I saw Charlie Adam swing in the free-kick from which Luis Suarez scored Liverpool's first Premier League goal of the season, against Sunderland on the first day.I will be following Charlie's progress closely as the campaign goes on, because I feel proud to have played a part, however small, in that lad's career.

It was a bit weird last season, because he wanted to leave Blackpool for Liverpool in the January transfer window and it didn't happen. With hindsight, should we have sold him then? What's done is done and there's no point going over it.

The only regret I do have is that we didn't offer him – and several other lads – big, improved contracts as soon as we won promotion to the top flight. But to do that you have to be 100 per cent convinced you are going to survive. My chairman at Blackpool probably wasn't, and quite rightly didn't want to risk getting lumbered with a huge wage bill if we came back down to the Championship.

But I have nothing but admiration for Charlie. Even though he wanted to leave, from January onwards every time he put a shirt on for Blackpool he tried as hard as he could and that is all I can ask.

The difficult thing for me is that I've got to fill the void left by his departure, which is ridiculously tough. I could search the world for the next five years and not find anyone who passes a ball the way he does.

He was a big fish in a small pond with us. Now he's a tiny fish in a massive reservoir but he will learn how to deal with that. It is a big step up but I think he can do it and be a success.

Depending on the way Kenny Dalglish chooses to play, Liverpool are going to have one hell of a frightening line-up this season. When Steven Gerrard is fit and they have him, Charlie and Lucas Leiva in the middle... well, good luck to any opposing team trying to stop that lot. There is so much creativity and goals in those three alone that it doesn't bode well for the rest of the Premier League.

Lucas and goals just doesnt click for me. 😛

Could have done without some his snide remarks during the initial part of the Adam transfer saga, but overall yeah, he's a decent guy and a good manager when he finds a club that suits him.

Adam and Gerrard driving midfield – how good does that sound?

Liverpool-Manchester United on Saturday should be one of the games of the season so far, and I'm looking forward to seeing how my old player Charlie Adam gets on.

I think Charlie has done a great job for Liverpool, not that I doubted he wouldn't
. He is a class midfielder and the great thing is that he's still learning and still improving.

He is the type of lad who will listen and who genuinely wants to get better and he is determined to prove to Liverpool, and to everyone in football, what a talent he is. Some players have gone to Liverpool, a truly massive club, and not done the business, but Charlie will. He's got that self-confidence and belief in himself.

I'm excited about seeing him alongside Stevie Gerrard because I think that will bring on his game even further. And how good do they sound as a midfield partnership? Kenny Dalglish must be very excited about the future of his team because when you analyse what he has at his disposal it is enough to give any other Premier League manager a fright. Luis Suarez, Andy Carroll, Stewart Downing, with Charlie and Gerrard driving forward from midfield... that is some attacking line-up.

I remember doing the double over them last season with Blackpool – one of the proudest moments of my life – but Liverpool are a completely different animal now. Dalglish has worked wonders. He has brought stability back to the club and made them a force to be reckoned with and that, coupled with Liverpool having what I consider to be the best supporters in the world, means there are good times ahead for the red half of Merseyside. Having said all that, Manchester United are by far the best team in England at the moment.

It is Sir Alex Ferguson's strongest side in the last 10 years and what is so frightening is how young most of them are. Fergie is a living legend and it's almost embarrassing that only a couple of years ago certain people were suggesting he was losing the plot and that maybe his time was up.

Nobody in the game thought that – Ferguson isn't someone you ever write off. The man is a genius. He has built yet another great team, better than last season, and at this rate they will not only win the Premier League but get to the final of the Champions' League again. And if they face Barcelona, it will be a lot closer than last time.

Thought this is worth a share

It has been more than 15 months since Gary Parkinson suffered a massive stroke that means the only way he can communicate is by blinking his eyes.

Parky was in charge of youth development at Blackpool after a career that had taken him to Bloomfield Road via spells at Everton, Middlesbrough, Southend, Bolton, Burnley and Preston.

At the age of 42, and with a wife and three children, he had so much to look forward to.

Instead, he is now involved in the biggest fight of his life.

I haven’t even been to visit Parky in the Royal Bolton Hospital. I’m just not strong enough. Even as I write this, I am filling up with tears.

I know how selfish I sound but the last thing I would want would is for Gary to see me distraught. He would feel sorry for me. That’s the kind of fella he is.

You see, Parky is as mentally alert as he has always been. But his brain is ‘locked in’ to a body that has just stopped working. The only part of his body he can move are his eyelids.

If a human being can be subjected to anything more torturous then I have yet to learn about it.

I have spoken to his wonderful wife Debbie — a lady whose strength is a source of inspiration to everyone who knows her — and their kids. Like Gary, they refuse to give up. People have recovered despite suffering similar types of trauma and the phrase ‘Where there’s life, there’s hope’ could have been coined for the Parkinson family.

Family, friends, supporters of the clubs that Parky played for and even people who never even knew Parky have all rallied around to help a wonderful man through the Gary Parkinson Trust Fund.

Now I hope you can help me do my bit.

A few years ago I took up painting after I was advised that I needed a hobby that would act as a pressure valve to release the stresses and strains that come with being a football manager. My wife Kim and daughter Chloe are very talented artists and I have been so pleased with a couple of my latest efforts that I am confident enough to offer them up for auction in a bid to raise money for Gary Parkinson and his family.

Kim has also put some of her work up for auction and anyone who is interested in owning a unique piece of Holloway art can find details at: wornerhollowayartsco.ipage.com

I am also willing to undertake a commission for anyone willing to make a generous donation to Parky’s trust. If there is anything or anyone that you want captured on canvas then please get in touch.

Gary Parkinson is one of this world’s good guys.

Check out his art work!
