Who the fuck said Bentley has pace?

Oh
Well in comparion to Kuyt and Reira he's appeat lightening.

Anyway that slip aside he would greatly improve our current side and if he is being loaned out we should be looking.

At times he certainly was, and I'd have considered signing him then for the right price. I thought he'd had his wake-up call and was ready to step back on to a bigger stage. Even then, though, there were games when he was present in fact but not in spirit, and the way he's let things slip through his fingers at Tottenham - the club he followed as a kid, dream move, yadda yadda - has taken away my trust in his ability/willingness/either to hold it together at a big club.
Hhmmmm, for some reason I don't quite agree with that even thought every point is valid and makes perfect sense. Maybe he was a little too young at Arsenal to really appreciate it as well as the fact he grew up hating the club. His performances at Blackburn were, largely, excellent and the club did well purely on the back of he and Santa Cruz.

Why he hasn't made it happen at Spurs is beyond me and I do suspect Gene is right in that he's a bit of an arrogant dickhead. At 25 you'd hope a player was beginning to get an appreciation of the fact he ain't bigger than the club - I might be talking myself into your view point here Judge. Still, I can't help but think on some of the surging runs he'd make down the right for Blackburn, the deliveries he put across at the end of them, the quality of his dead ball efforts - it all adds up to talent. Maybe he needs a long run of games but I still believe he can do the business.

He doesn't have pace
Agreed - he's not quick. He does run powerfully though which can be an asset of itself.

He's failed at Spurs but that doesn't mean he'd fail everywhere. Sometimes, for whatever reason, transfers don't work out. Doesn't necessarily mean that a player won't be able to fit in better elsewhere.

Glen Johnson didn't do so well at Chelsea for example.

If he has problems off the pitch a certain type of manager would be able to sort that out.
I doubt Benitez could though anyway.
Bentley's had chance after chance though. The Arse, Blackburn and now Tottenham haven't been able to keep him performing on the pitch (and not "performing" off it). The guy has talent, but the brains of a rocking-horse. No thanks.
All valid points, Jules..but I do suspect we'll one day be talking about him like we[b/] now talk about Defoe and Bent ie 'the ones that got away'
Who's we then? Bent is at Sunderland for Gods sake. How in hell did he get away? That's his level. It annoys me no end when people talk about Darren fucking Bent at Liverpool. One that got away my arse.
As in good players 'we' (meaning the club) should have been looking at when they were available.

Sunderland is 'his level'?

Sorry to break it to you, but we're not much better than that at the moment.

If he can't get into the Spurs team, he shouldn't be anywhere near our team.
He doesn't have pace. He can cross and shot, and that's it.

IF Spurs were selling a right winger, then Aaron Lennon would be the one we should buy.
But that won't happen.

You have a point, but I think Bentley has more in his tank.

Anyway, you're right; neither will happen.

As for the 'can't get in the Spurs team'; it's Lennon keeping him out.

I'd rather Bentley on our flank than Dirk Kuyt or, (at the moment) Torres

Another who thinks because he can't get in the Spurs team makes him inadequate for Liverpool. Apparently it's impossible for a side to have two decent players in one position..

Where are Spurs in the league again? Ahead of us, with a better squad of players, that's where.

Bizarre mentality.

Yes, it's a bizzare mentality to only want the best players availeble playing for our club, or even being considered.

There's a reason Arry won't play him, there's a reason why Wenger let him go.

He's not good enough.
Paying 7-10 mill for that twat is a waste of money.

Wenger let him go and he went on to earn a 16M pound transfer a few years later. That's a mistake in my book.

And it doesn't matter if they're on the bench at a supposedly lesser team. Like I mentioned earlier in the thread, look at Defoe a few years ago - couldn't get a game for love nor money at Spurs and moved to Portsmouth. The rest is history.

Anyway, pointless debate.

I was actually planning to paste current league table, with Spurs 4 points ahead of us, but decide against it in the end.l

Bentley is a good player, and more importantly better than wat we currently have in that position.

However, if we were to sign him is it likely that Benitez would get the best out of him?

Taking players who have had trouble elsewhere hasn't generally been his strong point. Pennant and Bellamy for example.

And that club is ruing getting totally fucked on that transfer.

I don't see how it can be viewed that Wenger made a mistake to let Bentley go at all, particularly given that they - according to some reports - tagged on quite a significant sell-on clause. He was never going to get the games to develop at Arsenal, a club that isn't particularly renowned for wanting nothing but crosses from their wide-men, and without that development they were never going to get much more than they did.

Someone posted something on here a while back about this. I can't remember if it was an article or a piece of insider gossip, but the gist of it was that a number of Rafa's less successful signings were down to him going for players he'd been warned by others not to sign, and that he did so because he was convinced he could get the best out of them.

Funnily enough I wouldn't include Bellamy on that list. I didn't think he did badly for us, and I wonder whether he'd have been sold if we hadn't made a profit on the deal.

I too think he'd be a good acquisition, for some reason.
Can cross, can dribble has pace and scores goals.

Which is miles better than what we have now.
Tell me how he's better than Kuyt. Go on.

He's not but that's not saying much currently. When they're both in top form, it's a far more interesting question ...
