We'd have been better off with them, no question, but if they were here now everyone would be looking to replace them.
This is true, and of all the regrets that can be articulated over the last many shit months, these three players wouldn't be the highest on the list. I will always wonder what could have been with Aquilani in particular, but there you go.

There are big changes ahead for the team in general, and if we are left wondering what would have been with Benayoun et al, we haven't made the right changes.

Yossi wanted out.
This isn't really true Pat. Rafa no longer wanted Yossi on the team.
He left after Rafa was gone.

Yossi always seemed to love playing for us but he could have stayed to fight for his spot once it was clear Rafa was gone.
He made the choice to join Chelsea ( hard to blame him really as I thought for a scoring midfield which were in short supply he was treated poorly by LFC)
The deal was basically done from I understand. Yossi didn't have much say in the matter. He doesn't have a bad word to say about the club from the many interviews he's given here.
Its a shame. I miss Yossi.

Dont it always seem to go.....

Yossi was a good squaddie, a far more dangerous option than Maxi (but probably more expensive on wages). If anything Pat says is true (he wanted to go), than fuck him (as you said in another thread, I don't want Torres like players on this team). But I never saw that with him (his agent was a prick though!), and it's a pity really as he's a better option off the bench than we're currently using.
I think he is better than a squaddie.
If you watch anything from our last 3 seasons all of our good play went through him. We should have kept him.

Oncy's right on this - players that went were better than what came in. However, you cannot keep players who don't want to be here or are a disruptive influence either. it's a bit fucked if you fucked if you don't on this one. As for Kuyt. I'd keep him as a squaddie and I highly doubt he's going to be earning anywhere in the region of 100k a wekk
We shouldnt have sold him either.
Riise
Cisse
Hyppia
Riera
Benayoun
Aquilani
Bellamy
Crouch
We sell a lot of good players innit.

Fucking dicks.

Oncy, I've always maintained the stance that the minute a player (regardless of stature) doesn't want to play for us.......... SELL!!

Be it Xabi, Mascherano and/or Torres to name a few. I had empathy for Xabi because of how Rafa handled him. They're are gone and I'm happy for that. What I'm not happy about is how poorly we've replaced them with the exception of the latter.

In the immortal words of King Kenny, "Nobody is bigger than the club!"

the big problem in the past (and it remains to see if this will change in the future) is we have been reduced to the position of needed to sell players to fund purchases (epecially in the past 4 transfer windows where we made a profit) so it's difficult to keep mid level players when you want to purchase better players. low levels players wont fetch enough money and selling top level players with destroy your first team. you need to be in a position where your owners allow you buy quality and then release lesser quality when the time suits you better, basically a massive injection in quality all at once like what has happened to man city. man city now with their powerful squad can pick and choose who they sell from their dross.

if the position we were in (sell to buy) we needed to get our purchases spot on but unfortunately we got our big purchases spectacularly wrong.
keane - 20m
aqua - 20m

to massive signings that contributed next to nothing when here, that's 40m that would have added squad depth and didn't.
I agree. Thats why on that list i didnt put any of those players.
You want to go? Fine then fuck off.

Completely agree with Oncy again here. I was one of those people (along with Farky) who was very upset about selling Yossi and signing Cole. I couldn't understand how everyone was happy to let a player who was capable of 10 goals a season and handful of assists for an injury prone player who probably never top 5 of either for us in a season. Yossi's season ending injury made me look stupid but I think Cole has done a good job proving me right now.

And about Riera, we haven't had the balanced attack we had with him before or since. I don't think its coincidence that he played a major role in our 2nd place season and that his omission (along with the major reason; losing Xabi) from the team was one of the reasons we saw such a huge drop off the year after. We've been so poor in the transfer market for so long until last month.

Rafa didn't treat Yossi well and he wanted to go. He was promised that he could leave but Rafa got the boot first so he could of stayed. His choice.

Riera was shipped for discipline and he was vocal in the press about the team. Stability was necessary. While he wasn't and outstanding talent, the balance he gave us (and it was plain to see against the Mancs) improved us as an attacking unit.

We sold our top tier players in the last 3 or 4 windows and replaced them with less than stellar players. Therein lies the problem.

I must say I was dissapointed when I saw the thread title "I wish" only to open it and find out it was NOT followed by a "I was in Greenall Whitley land"

I fucking despised Cisse. I vividely remember me & Piedro plus about three others slagging him off whilst everyone else raved about him.

I was most definitely one of the others. He makes Babel seem like Einstein.

I really don't know what to say about Cisse.

Remember when Rafa kept playing him on the wing ?

Oh, dear Rigsby !

He did, however, come through in Istanbul and Cardiff.

I will NOT, under any circumstances, condone his "slapping Jude upside the head, even if subsequent events, ie, Come Dine With Me, have shown her to be a small-minded, jealous harpy".

No sir, I will not !

And the Super Cup.

I desperately wanted to like Cisse and tried very hard to. He was fucking lazy though, so I can understand why regular match-goers hated him because you got a much better appreciation of it at the game than you did on TV.
God she was a fucking horrible twat though. I think it would have been hard to spend a lot of time in her company and NOT punch her in the face.
I liked Cisse. I thought he was good.
